We did a refi for loan consolidation plus took some cash out for minor home improvements. My foyer, hallway and kitchen and baths are already tiled. We are thinking of tiling the rest of the house because I am so tired of getting the carpets cleaned only to have them look bad again 2 weeks later. So I'm thinking of doing the tile, decorative throw rug thing. Has anyone done this, and if so, are you glad you did it?

We do not have tile throughout the whole house, but will say I wish it was. Low maintenance and cool in the summer. :) If we had the $ to do it, it would be all tile.

When we were house hunting, one of the houses we looked at was completely tiled. It had a very "clean" look, but it did echo very badly. I'm sure that enough furniture and drapes would probably lessen the sound effects. The house was too small for us, but I really liked the tile throughout.

If you do tile, I recommend getting a dark grout. We have tile in our kitchen, foyer, laundry room and three baths and I hate cleaning the grout!!!! We are thinking of getting the grout tinted to match the color of DIRT!!!!!

My goal is to either have tile or hardwood throughout the house. I am also tired of dirty carpets. It may be a little cold in winter, but I'll have rugs and I have a heater.

I would love to have all tile. We're thinking about building a house in the next few years, and I think that we'll probably do either all tile or a mix of tile and hardwood. There will definitely be tile in high traffic, common areas, like the living room and dining room, and maybe hardwoods or laminate in the bedrooms. I want reddish-brown tile (about the color of our dirt in SC) and dark grout.

I have hardwood floors throughout my house except for the kitchen - its great when you have kids who tend to spill stuff. The downside is it tends to get cold in the winter, but we just wear slippers. The upside is its super easy to clean, and I think it looks a lot nicer than carpet, particularly when carpet gets old.

As for the Pergot in my kitchen, well, I just love, love, love Pergot. If I had the $$ I would put Pergot throughout the whole house. Talk about easy to clean!

We have 18 inch ceramc tile in our family room, kitchen, powder room, living room, dining room and laundry room. I like the look, when it's clean. Right now I'm facing doing a heavy grout cleaning and sealing (the original owners evidently never thought sealing was necessary:rolleyes: I like that it's cool, too and cleaning up things is easier, like after you drag the christmas tree out and are left with pine needles and sappy water. Paint, glitter, glue and stuff from my daughter is easier now. Things break VERY easily if they fall, from glasses to lego sculptures. We do NOT have any echo in the house, even though I only really have one large rug in the family room and small ones in front of the sink and doors. Oh, and it's VERY slippery when wet, I've wiped out more than once coming in from the pool. If I had to do it again, I'd probably do a marble tile with VERY minimal grout lines or hard wood. My tile is a distressed looking ceramic. But I don't think DH is going to let me rip out 1400 square feet of tile just to put something else down! :D Oh, and be prepared to mop a lot!

Why I don't like it:

1. Shows each and every speck of dust (on sunny days).
2. Kitty-cat furballs seem to accumulate in corners daily. We have one short-hair cat.
3. On days when I'm rushing around, I feel like my feet are bruised by bedtime. I could barely walk the day after Christmas!
4. Really cold in wintertime (MUST wear slippers/socks)
5. You drop ANYTHING - and you know it's broke (dish, beeper, child, etc.) If you dropped a large can of beans on it, you'll more than likely crack it. I dropped a screwdriver and it chipped the tile.

Why I DO like it:

1. Cool in the summer, which is a HUGE plus here in Florida.
2. Easy to clean (my SWIFFER is my new best friend)
3. Hubby was smart enough to use gray grout, doesn't show stains.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. But not EVERYWHERE.

My friend has tile throughout the house, even the bedrooms. The house does look clean, but it doesn't have that warm and cozy feeling that I like. One of the things that my friend is unhappy about is the grout and how dirty it gets. They had the grout professionally sealed, yet it still looks dirty. She tried to clean it with one of those steam cleaners and she ended up discoloring some of the tile. I didn't think that could happen as tile is a non-porous surface.

Personally, I don't like tile throughout the house, especially if you have children.
