My SIL just got diagnosed with Colitis. She's only 30 and it kindof worried about this. Does anyone have this, that could give me some information to pass on to her? Any difficulities, any medications you need to take, side effects, etc? Thanks!

Do you mean just regular ole colitis or ulcerative colitis? I have a strong family history of the latter and it's an awful debilitating disease. My cousin does a chemotherapy-like treatment while my dad and aunt have been mostly treated with steroids. My dad also had life-threatening complications after a heart attack -- the colon is a vascular organ and problems there are a heart surgery complication.

I dont think its the ulcerative colitis....all she told me was that it was mild active colitis, and her doctor gave her a prescription for some suppositories and said it really wasn't a big deal. Apparently some mild inflamation showed up on her colonoscopy.

I have mild ulcerative colitis and it's controlled with Asacol.

Ask away, I'll answer as best I can.

One of my best friend's sister has it. I know she has a hard time traveling but nothing else is TOO difficult he tells me. She is also only 17 so I don't know if it gets worse with age. When I was learning about it I found the previously posted site very helpful in educating myself about her illness.

I know what triggers mine and I make sure I don't eat anything that will trigger it when I have to be places without suitable restrooms for a while. ie, when I had double header softball games, the porta potties weren't the ideal place to spend time!

My DD has a friend who is really struggling with UC. They just can't get it under control. It's been really hard and she's been in the hospital off and on (more on than off) since the end of August. They are going to travel to another city and have experimental medicine to get this thing under control.

She having a tough time, yesterday she told me that they were going to keep her at home at least through the first semester of school. She is so behind and is not able to catch up.

for many years I have had IBS, and have also since been diganosed with crohn's disease. for many years I was pretty sick. for me, this runs in my family..so what is needed to do, is for one. If she is having any problems would be to talk to a nutritionist and get on a "diet" that works best for her. Which is usually a low ash diet.

Then you get to a point were you know your triggers, like I cannot eat ANY raw veggies etc. I also have the proper meds, if something happens. I have seen the ER room when at disney TOO many times to count.

But once it is understood by the patient the much easier it is to deal with.
good luck!
