Does anyone have an Aldi by them?

Here is my bias...we have a very strong connection to a tri-state grocery chain. So keep that in mind as I "talk" about Walmart, Aldi's, and other discount food places.

We have moved to a community of 6000 people this past spring. My grocery store, Aldi's and Walmart are the grocery options.

First, the MANAGER of Aldi's shops weekly in my store. Her MOTHER, also shops at my store. Around here, products tend to be close to code dates at Aldi's. Now w/ meat, the prices MAY compare to a local grocery store, but it isn't the same. Are you paying for the same at Walmart/ Aldi as you would at a meat counter in a local grocery store... probably yes. BUT no, you are more than likely not getting the quality. This particular grocery chain only sells USDA choice meats.. not select. there IS a difference

Quality, quality, quality... many times you are not getting that at Walmart or Aldi. Price may be the same, but it is NOT apples to apples.. It's more like Apples to Green Beans... not the same, AT ALL

My store's meat:
1. is never gassed (CO2 to preserve freshness/color)
2. is never injected...water solutions add weight and plumpness.. why pay for water?
3. is cut daily
4. free from added preservatives
5. is all natural

I'm all about saving money. I would shop "other places" to try to cut cost for our family. I'm a stay at home mom and things were really tight 10 years ago.

My biggest advice for saving money at a NORMAL grocery store is to KNOW YOUR STORE... Buying canned goods (off brand) at ALdi's is NO cheaper than buying NAME BRAND (even low sugar/ salt items) ON SALE at a regular grocery store. When you walk a store, you get to know what a great price is on something. Match it w/ a coupon and then it's WAY cheaper than Aldi...

Besides my soapbox of walmart underselling everyone... get out of walmart and support your local shops including the grocery stores.

Sorry to be the minority with the negativity, that's just the way it is here. I know many stores are different than ONE location. Maybe Aldi's and Walmart are great places in other communities.

But, but, cydswipe, that'd take pricebooking and label reading and all that dull stuff before even getting to the fun stuff like couponing!

Seriously, though, ALDI, Walmart et al spend fortunes on marketing to convince the masses that they're cheaper. Individual consumers generally don't do a commodity basket pricebook of the options in their town (I do, because I'm eccentric like that and it's free fun, that plus an eclair from a bakery counter and we're talking date night around here). Most people will buy the marketing that a store is cheaper, and if it looks scuzzy or the product is inferior, they'll figure that's just proof that it's cheaper, when it's really just proof that the place is scuzzy and inferior. There are actual price comparison studies out there, I've mentioned at least one before on the Dis, and they basically agree: the big "cheap" chains are having us all for a ride. It's marketing rather than reality, and a lot of us accept worse service and worse quality for the privilege of paying the same or more.

Example, I just price shopped full size fleece and flannel sheet sets. All the warehouse stores and so on are carrying them right now, so wouldn't you figure BJ's or Walmart or another "discounter" would have them cheapest? Nope. Target, Costco, Walmart, Kohl's, and Sears all charged the same for comparable quality flannel sheets (cheapest medium quality flannel sheets were on amazon.com, but not overstock.com or other self-proclaimed web discounters).

Wow know for a fact mind sell produce Aildi. I love the produce.
