Do you have a Papillion? What kind of a dog is it? Does it shed a lot? It is smart and easy to train? What about potty training?

I have a standard poodle because of allergies, but I also have 2 cats and 2 rats in the house. I have wanted a lap dog ever since I held my poodle in my lap while typing 2 years ago while she was a puppy. I am thinking about bringing home a Papillion puppy. Here's the story ...

My sister adopted a 6-year old Papillion girl a few weeks ago from a shelter. The dog was a breeder from a puppy mill and was passed from shelter to shelter for a couple of weeks until she ended up outside the Chicago area. She had a tumor/growth on her side and bad teeth which were both taken care of after my sister adopted her about 3-4 weeks ago. The dog was put under anesthesia for the operations.

Anyway ... on Sunday my sister found her little dog giving birth to PUPPIES! Sugar had 3 adorable little pups (1 boy, 2 girls) and I am thinking of taking one of the babies.

One other thing ... do you think the anesthesia hurt the pups in utero? The vet did not know she was pregnant when she did the operation.

I don't know if that type of dog would get along with the rats. We had a toy (min-pin), and I think I read that a lot of little dogs were actually bred to catch mice in homes. BTW, we are getting 2 rats from a breeder next month - are they good pets?

The rats are in a cage and kept behind closed doors. One of my cats is very predatory.

A breeder is a GREAT place to get rats :). I have one from a breeder and one from someone who had an "oops" litter. I had a second one from the "oops" litter but she became very aggressive and bit my DD while she was trying to break up a fight. Rats are usually NOT aggressive and they don't bite people but this one was in a blood rage. She went back to the woman we adopted her from. The good thing about a breeder is that they breed for temperament. I found a great website here about rats: http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat

We have a papillon and we love him. He just turned 2 this week. He sheds a little but not like most long-haired dogs, they only have one coat of fur insted of a top and bottom coat like some dogs have. Potty training took a little longer than with some dogs but the last time he had an accident was when he was about 11 mos. old. He is very easy to train, they rank in the top 10% for obedience. He is very eager to please you and will sulk for hours if he thinks you are mad at him. He gets along great with 2 of the 3 cats we have the other cat doesn't like him. He loves to be held or be near you all the time. A great bread to have, I'd get another in a heartbeat.

Have been reading up on them for quite a while and attempted to buy one. None were available in my area when the time was right. There are breeders online that will ship but I won't deal with a breeder that ships dogs and I also want to "meet" several of the pups available and see their personalities in action. How they respond and interact is important to me. So...if I can find one within a couple of hours of me, I'd love to buy one. Truly gorgeous dogs! :goodvibes

My Dsil has 2 paps. The oldest is 2+ & is very shy, very uncertain about everything, but generally a very nice dog. The other is a puppy and a niece who is a professional dog trainer says paps are usually very high energy. The only thing I know negative is that supposedly for the first 12 - 18 mo you have to be extremely careful as they can easily break their backs.

We have had several papillon pups in the local paper here but they are $$$. We just can't afford that kind of $$$ right now for a pup. We would love one though becaue they are just the most awesome little guys. We want one so that our little long haired mini Dachshund will have a pal partially. But also because Mama loves the furry babies.....:hippie:

A friend of mine owns a Papillon that she named Toby. He is the cutest little fella. I fell in love with him instantly. I've been trying to talk DH into getting one. He says with the two of us working it wouldn't be fair to the dog being cooped up in the house, and not being able to go out when it needed.
