My neighbor across the street has two children. One is 5 and one is 2. She works full-time. So every morning she drops the kids off at the babysitters house. But here is the thing that drives me nuts. She puts the 2 yr old in one car seat but puts the 5yr old in the front seat. She has a van and also another car seat. Why doesn't she use it. I just don't understand this at all. Teaching a 5 yr old the wrong thing to do and putting the child in unnecessary danger.

If they have a passenger side airbag, it is very dangerous. In any case, a five year old should be in a booster seat.

I am a child care provider and use to have a set of parents that rode around with their two year old on their lap and hanging out the window. They didn't want to listen to her yell because she didn't want to be in the car seat. She is now six and still rides in the front seat on their lap. I called the police but they said they couldn't ticket them unless they were stopped for another traffic violation. I don't understand parents. They show what airbags do on crash dummies can you imagine what it would do to a five or six year old.

What's the age cut-off for booster seats in NJ? I know most places (but not everywhere) it is 8 or 80 lbs. So, I suppose if there's no airbag in the front seat and the cut-off is age 5 for boosters, she's not breaking the law. But, it's still not the safest place.

The law is the same her 8 or 80 pounds. The van is new, I am assuming that there are side airbags, but besides that she is breaking the law. It just doesn't make sense to me. She never did this before, she just started about a month ago.

whenever I see that I just say (to myself) "Don't they love them?"

I won't even let my 9 1/2 yo or even 12 year old sit in the front seat!!!

Yep. That's wrong.

Well, go and tell her about it. :confused3

My DD 8 always asked to ride in the front seat and begs for it. I have to explain to her why is so dangerous.

If the van is new maybe it has one of the air bag switches that automatically detects if the passenger is less than 80 pounds, if so it will automatically turn off. Still not the best idea. I let my 10 year old occassionally ride in the front seat in our new van because it does have the switch but only when there is no other choice.
Dont think Id let me 5 year old do it though.

Well I would tell her but we are not on good speaking terms right now, but my other neighbor which is a good friend of mine sees her do this everyday and is really mad about it and told me she is going to say something to her. I don't think it will matter though. I think she will contine to do it.

I think you're right. Just hope that nothing happens to the poor child.

Oh I see!
Well, what else can you do, some people doesn't care until something bad happens, poor kids.

My ex-neighbor ( thank god she left) was the most stupid mother ever, first she was pregnant at least twice a year, I don't even knew how many kids she had.
She was never home, the kids rode the bus and the older was 8 and the other 2 girls 7 and 6, they had to walked alone from the bus drop to their house, not a biggie for an adult, but for kids, at least to me it was.
Several times they asked me if they could come in my house because it was too cold outside and their Mommy wasn't home, it was last winter the temp was like 35 degrees outside, they only had a light sweater on. Of course i let them in and they were so happy, they ate and played until she showed up, the first time, she told me that she got stuck in traffic, then she was somewhere else, until the 3 time I told her that i wasn't no babysitter and that I felt so bad for her kids, but she needed to take care of them, she didn't work or anything. She knew the bus drop time, anyway, couple days later a sheriff showed up at my door, he asked me about her and her kids, because someone called them about the kids being alone in the house, all 7 of them :earseek: and they had no heat because she didn't pay the gas, so i told the officer all about the bus drop issue, he said that the kids were in the house and refuse to open the door, they found a window open and one of the little girls got out, so at the end the got all the kids out, the children protection services was there too and they took the kids, it was almost 8 PM when she got home. They took her kids from her, she was mad at me and accused me of calling the cops on her, I didn't do it, but i was happy someone else did. Well, last August the kids were back, and one day we were playing ball outside, she was getting ready to go out and put the kids in the car, no car seat nothing, she had 7 kids and a Ford Explorer, only one car seat for the baby one, so next thing i knew was the scream of my son when he saw the truck moving with all the kids inside and no mommy!! :earseek: :earseek: Thank God the hit the phone box and not another car, I was so scare and pissed at her! She was mad at the kids for "driving" the truck!!!!
I didn't call the cops, only BellSouth because they destroyed the phone box, no phone for a week for me. :earseek: Finally she left and the other day i saw her at the post office and guess what?? She's pregnant AGAIN!!

:earseek:
