I'm really dating myself here. :goodvibes

I remember being in high school and flying to vacations. My mom making sure my brother and I had nice outifits on to fly. I didn't have to wear a dress, but nice pants or a skirt and a nice shirt each time. Now it's anything goes. And I mean ANYTHING. :scared:

I remember it, but it never made any sense to me at all.

No my memories are lining the back of the station wagon with blankets and pillows so we could sleep.

Flying? Never had the money for that.;)

My parents still dress nicely to fly, but then again they dresser very nicely unless they are working in the yard or staying home. My father is very old school Cape Cod/New England proper!! We also dress up nicely for family dinners.

I dress nicely, nicer than if I am sitting home but nothing beyond business casual. My DH on the other hand is all about comfort and wears shorts and t-shirts in the summer and jeans/t-shirt when going home in the winter.

I dress DS up nicely.

yup - I remember flying to Orlando in the early 70s (my great-grandparents lived near WDW, so I got to go every other year!). I was about 8 or 9 and had a beautiful butter yellow sleeveless dress with a matching coat! Very Mary Tyler Moore looking! I loved:love: that outfit! I'm sure my shoes were patent!!

It was "such" a big deal to fly!

I was talking to a retired flight attendant and she told me that anyone flying on a comp. ticket is expected to dress formally.

I remember dressing up. I was 13 for my first flight and I think I wore a sundress....many, many years ago. :rolleyes1 A lot of the adults were dressed up as if they were going to church.

It's funny you should mention this as I look at some of the way people are dressed now on some of these flights and I always think back to when people dressed up to fly. Personally, I'm glad we can be more comfortable but some people take it to the extreme.

I don't remember dressing up to fly; I think that was a little before my time.

However, I do remember when Delta was the official airline of WDW. On the plane, they would give you this paper visor thing that was Mickey Mouse's head.
The flat shade part of the visor was his lower face, but his nose could punch out to stick straight up.

And, remember when kids were invited into the cockpit to see it and then they'd get their "flight wings"?

While I don't go all out for travel, I always try to look nice when flying. I was a flight attendant years back, and I was appalled every day at the attire people chose for traveling. There is just no reason to go ANYWHERE in ripped, holey, stained or otherwise disgusting clothing. Save it for yardwork and painting the house, people.

Well, sort of. No one expects anyone flying on a comp ticket to wear a ballgown or tuxedo. ;) But when I would use my passes, I always dressed in business casual attire (usually a nice top, slacks and heels). Men were expected to wear similarly nice clothing (my DH would come along with me sometimes, and he was never wearing anything less than nice khakis and a sweater or collared shirt). No jeans allowed on a comp pass!

I remember dressing up to fly. When I was 10 (1980) we spent Christmas with my aunt who lived in San Francisco. My grandmother made my sister and I matching jumpers specifically to wear on the plane. I wore my wooden clogs with it! What a dork!

heck, i remember when you got a meal even on short hop flights. as a kid going from northern california to southern (just about an hour in the air), depending on the time of day you got a small meal-breakfast was usualy danish, fresh fruit, juice and some yogurt, lunch was a small sandwich and chips, and during the dinner hour it was some kind of small warm single item entree. now i can fly for hours and hours and not even be offered those vile salty crackers (though kudos to alaska airlines-even on their super short hops they offer free wine and beer with the nasty crackers:rotfl: ).

anyone remember when you could get great rates by just showing up at the airport without reservations (and no need for an i.d.) and seeing if there was room on a flight that had a stop over? i remember doing this multiple times at san francisco international in the 80's. there was a red eye from seattle to lax that did a disembarkation at sfo around midnight-if there was room (and there always was) you could fly for less than $20:love:

Yup, I do! When my brother and I were kids, we flew to Japan a couple of times and California a few others. We always had to wear pants, shoes and a nice shirt. And I remember that all the adults were in nice attire as well.

Who remembers when we actually received hot meals with real silver wear and little salt/pepper shakers?

And the movies they'd show displayed on the bulkhead wall!

I only flew once as a child and we dressed up.
My Mom traveled a good bit in the 70's. My Dad owned a little Ford dealership (there were small dealerships in small towns then) and Ford used to give out trips regularly. (Sell the most Pintos!) any way there are tons of pics of her traveling in her double knit pant suits with her hair up on top of her head. (Think Priscilla Presley)
Good times!

Boy, do I!:rotfl:

I remember dressing up my niece for her first trip to see my sister in Tennessee. She dropped something on her white pantsuit and the stewardesses had NOTHING to clean it up with. It was a TRAVESTY to not be sparkling clean on a trip in an airplane!!

That was 35 years ago!!

Fast Forward to 1990, my Dad puts on a SUIT to take a plane ride. We SCREAMED at him that that was so old fashioned!! :lmao:

Our family still dresses nicely for all of our flights. I don't understand why some folks assume you can not dress well and still be comfortable.

We didn't fly hardly when I was young. But when my DA came to town , we would go pick her up at the nearby airport. That is when the planes weren't gigantic and people actually walked out on the tarmac up the stairs that would be pulled to and from the plane. That part of the airport is still there for pilot lessons.

As for dressing up, I am very careful about what I wear in more terms of safety. No high heels, nothing tight. No pantyhose. Things made of cotton I try to wear.

I remember that. A few times we flew from FL to Cinci to visit the grandparents, and we wore skirts and slacks...never jeans or shorts. Now, I feel lucky if the person next to me isn't wearing pajamas and filthy flip flops. The last thing I want 3 feet from my face for 2 hours is some strange mans nasty toe nails.
I'm a strong advocate of shoes or pedicures.....

If the kids fly with my mom, they have to wear, as they call it, their casual sunday clothes.

DD has to wear a skirt, nice top, and her dress sandels/shoes. DS has to wear his dress shorts (he only wears on Sunday) or dockers, polo shirt, and his dress shoes.

She was appalled when I let them wear jean shorts, t-shirt, and flip-flops/sandels. She kept trying to make my son take his baseball cap off. She left him alone, once I told her he hadn't brush his hair that morning. He had, I just knew she wouldn't stop unless I did some thing. And unbrushed hair sends her off the deep end.

Oh yes. I flew a lot as a little girl and my parents always insisted that I look nice. I still try and wear something classy, at least khakis and a blouse. SH, however, won't play along.

I remember when you could smoke in airplanes as well. That was horrible.
