First of all, I know I am a bad Italian for not making my own sauce, but bear with me...

I was making dinner last night, opened a new jar of sauce and instinctively took out a couple teaspoons of sugar and added it. Then I though, I wonder if I am the only one who does this or do others like their sauce a little sweet too?

I add a very tiny amount of sugar, but I also put a tiny amount of sugar on something that I want to get brown, like chicken or pancakes.

i just made a load of italian food today (2 types of canaloni, spagetti and meatballs-all with homemade sauce).

i've never added sugar to my sauces, but i know some folks who do-they seem to think it cuts the acid in the tomatos.

i don't particulary care for sweeter sauces, but in some italian dishes i want a sweeter taste to i add red bell pepper.

MMM Canaloni, I am coming over and I don't care if you don't put sugar in your sauce :rotfl:

Never in a jar sauce but I will add a small amount if I am making my own.

Always, and we always make home-made "gravy", LOL, sorry, South Philly Italian here, third generation, but moved on over to South Jersey!!

I always add sugar to homemade sauce too. My mom did so I just thought I was supposed to too.

doesn't matter if i am doing jar or homemade i always add a bit of sugar to cut the acid, but i do add some extra salt to cut the sweetness..go figure, lol.

I finally just started making my own sauce and I put some sugar in there as well- never to jarred sauce though. They are usually sweeter anyway. :)

I make my own, and I don't add sugar. I do add cinnamon--very little. I like the way it adds a subtle flavor without overpowering the sauce. I believe in lots of garlic & cooking it slowly for a long time.

Nope, there is already sugar in the jarred sauce. If I make homemade I like the taste better without it. (of course I don't use salt either)

agotta, thanks for the memory. My Grandmother, who passed many years ago, used to put sugar in her homemade sauce. She was born in Italy and came here when she was a young girl. I always remember her making it with sugar. I don't add it in jar sauce (sorry Granny!), but will to homemade sauce which I confess doesn't happen very often these days!!

Happy Cooking and thanks for bringing up memories of my much missed Granny.

MIL always put sugar in her sauce, and it was the best.

I was making meatballs in a crockpot for a birthday party. I accidently dropped the sugar bowl into the crockpot. I scooped out some sugar but there was still lots in the sauce. I never had so many people tell me they were good!!! There was none leftover and they were fighting over the last serving!! Everyone was trying to figure out how I made them!! :rotfl2: I finally told someone they were from my "sugarbowl recipe"

I put sugar in my homemade sauce. When I got married, my mom and mother in law put together a book of their favorite recipes for me. I actually took both of their homemade sauce (excues me... gravy) recipes, combined what I thought would taste good and created my recipe from theirs. My MIL uses sugar, my mom doesn't.

My husband always says it was the best gift his mom ever gave me :teeth:
