Does anyone else admit to hating sushi?

I hated sushi when I first tried it, but then I've hated a lot of things the first time I tried them. Now I love sushi.

My own, very biased, opinion is that sushi is not real food and if eating tree bark became trendy people would be raving about it. Personally, I would never eat sushi as long as I could still have a good old juicy burger.

That is one of the most ignorant statements I think I've read on DIS. Basically by you calling sushi not a real food, your discounting the diet of the whole Japanese culture for centuries.

While I agree George's assertion is arguably offensive, it should be noted that sushi was not "the diet of the whole Japanese culture for centuries". Sushi is a specific dish. It has, indeed, existed for at least 1300 years, but it was just one dish in the cuisine. Japanese cuisine was principally rice or noodles, with a soup and a side dish, which often included fish or meat, vegetables, tofu, etc.

"Sushi" has become too broad a term to say you either like it or don't. Some I like, some I don't. Always willing to try.

I agree, Sushi in the specific sense was not, but in the broad sense that American's relate to sushi, it was. And when referencing the diet of a whole Japanese culture, it doesn't mean they did not eat other things in their diet. Diet was meant as part of what they ate, not the only thing they ate.

I really don't like sushi. It's hard when the girls from work want to got to the "trendy" sushi bar on Fridays for sake and rolls. The texture of the rice/seaweed is what gets me, not the idea of eating raw fish. I've had sashimi too and hated it as well.

I'm curious how these two sentences work together, given that sashimi has no rice and no seaweed.

I'm a vegetarian, so I have only limited choices when it comes to sushi. That said, I love my vegetarian sushi platters that they throw together for me.

I don't know if I "hate" it or not, never tried it and see no reason to.

It's funny you mention a juicy burger. My husband LOVES burgers - the juicier the better - however he also LOVES sushi.

I personally don't eat sushi becuse it's 'trendy', I eat it because I like it. I don't care which celebrity is eating it or not - that doesn't matter to me. I enjoy sushi because I enjoy sushi - period.

BTW, I even if tree bark would be 'trendy', I wouldn't try it...unless it tasted good with some pickled ginger and soy sauce! LOL!!! :lmao:

I really enjoy sushi. I've liked it since I was... 6? I can't even remember the first time I tried it. Yes it's trendy but there's a reason, IMO.

Now that I would like to try.

LOVE it! It's one of my favorite foods on Earth. I am the opposite of you OP and can't for the life of me figure out what there is about it that anyone could possibly NOT like. :confused3

Having lived in South Korea and visited Japan several times, I can tell you what i don't like-seaweed, aka, nori in Japan and kim in South Korea. My problem is not with raw seafood.

I think some people think that all sushi is raw fish or other sea creatures, but it is not. There are several kinds of cooked sushi. If you want raw for sure, ask for sashimi.

Sushi is not an "In" thing, it is not a fad, it is not cool, it is not trendy.
Its a type of food. A type that has been around for a VERY long time. No one created it so you could try the new Hip thing, its part of a culture that has been eating it long before we were a country. To write off a whole culture is just weak in my opinion. People eat it because it tastes good. Not everyone wants to eat disgusting Mcdonalds and fake processed junk everyday. :confused3

I disagree. Foods can certainly become trendy. Anyone from the 80's remember oat bran? That being said, I would hope that people who eat it only do so because they really like it.

Fwiw, the Japanese do not live on sushi. It is not something eaten daily.

Sushi/Japanese food in general is absolutely the hot trend right now! There were zero Japanese restaurants in the southtowns of Buffalo until a few years ago. We had to drive out to the northtowns if we wanted hibachi. Now all of the sudden they're popping up everywhere and they're very popular. Also, I can buy sushi in the grocery store (Wegmans) and it actually quite good. That was unheard of a few years ago.

I like it!

I don't love sushi, but neither do I hate it. I tried it about a month ago at a little Japanese restaurant with great reviews on Urbanspoon. I liked it enough, but it's not something that I would ever crave or "have" to have.

I tried it several times and I don't likke it. I feel like I must be missing something because some people really love it. Maybe it's th sauce?
