Does Anyone Actually WATCH Religious TV, Like EWTN Or Whatever?

In the past there was some programs on EWTN that were interesting to me. Sometimes looking through the channels I'll see a topic that is interesting to me. The man across the street from me is a televangelist that most of you would know. Very nice man and interesting to talk to. Just a regular guy. It's as if it's just a job to him.

I see a lot of my medical hospitalized patients watch it, and a lot of the psych patients like it on in the day room. I think they find it comforting.

The talk of Jim and Tammy takes me back. I lived in Charlotte when they were in their heyday. Even had neighbors who worked at PTL and we heard some wild tales before things were ever made public. I was floored he got another gig to go right back on TV and continue with his old tricks. Can't people remember...or at least read???

I went through a period of discernment in my early-mid twenties when I thought I might want to be a nun. I watched EWTN very closely, because the channel is run by an order of Poor Clares and they used to be on all the time. That, along with volunteering at my church and going to daily Mass helped me make my decision after a few years that it wasn't for me. I've done a complete 180 since then-I don't go to Mass at all anymore, although I still say a daily Rosary and pray all the time. I'm just not Religious material.
I kinda feel the same way. I was brought up Catholic, went to Catholic Schools for the first nine years of my education, sang in the choir, was briefly an alter-boy, but, as I got older I got very disillusioned with organized religion especially lately. The self righteousness of members is something that I abhor. Most of the worlds unrest and inability to live in peace, stems from those one sided teachings. I still feel that I am spiritual in the sense that I believe in God, but, until a religious sector shows me the things that I had been taught to be christian behavior, I'm not interested in participating.

Or just a jew who eats CHEESEburgers at all.

Well, yes, but I thought it was funnier to add bacon and shellfish to the mix. :upsidedow

And if you want to get very pedantic, you can always point out that it's really only Orthodox Jews who consistently keep kosher. Many Conservative Jews do, but not all of them, and most Reform Jews don't.

So it's entirely possible to be religiously Jewish, quite devout in your practice/belief, and still enjoy your bacon cheeseburgers, with a side of lobster sauce.

Occasionally while flipping channels thru the remote, I'd chance upon Mother Angelica on one of those religious stations.

I'm not Catholic (or any religion really) but for some reason I was fascinated with her. Maybe it's because she was an older nun with the severe 1940's habit where only her face and hands were visible.

Sometimes the TV camera would just capture her from the shoulders up, like in the photo below.

On those occasions, I'd joke to DW that except for the veil and white bib, she was probably sitting there naked.
