Hey there!

We are in talks of going down to Disneyland for the first week in August. We are planning on driving down from Calgary, Alberta. Does anyone know if my (then) 2 month old will need a passport to cross the border? I have read that a birth certificate is all that's needed, but I am not sure if that is true or not. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance!

You are doing a land crossing of international borders, I would think that you would need the Canadian equivalent of a US passport or US passport card. You probably need to check with the Canadian State Department.

Thank you! That's what I needed. I looked on the Canadian Government site earlier, but could not find what I was looking for. That link took me right to it. Such a relief. All he needs is his birth certificate. :goodvibes

Just a side note: we just had our daughter's passport done and it was SUPER quick... we had it back within 2 1/2 weeks!

:)

yes, they need a passport. I travel to Canada every year and all the grandkids have needed passports the last few years.

Nope, you done't need one as far as I know...but as an OT WOW you are brave to drive that far with a 2 month old!

We drive from Edmonton but our kids are 8 and 9. I'm glad to see there is someone else out there that is as Disney crazy as us!

We will be there that same week. Have fun!

Hi there! We just did the epic drive in May - Grande Prairie, Alberta to Disneyland with my 7 year old DD and 12 month old DD - it was a great drive- no issues and we can't wait to do it again! About the border crossing - we had a passport for my 7 year old, but only brought a birth certificate for the baby and we had absolutely no problems exiting Canada or entering again afterwards. When you go by land or sea, a birth certificate is all that's needed for kids or babies (I think until they are 13...15? can't remember, but around that age). I do plan on getting a passport for the baby before we go again next year, but if I get busy and forget - it's no biggie. Only problem would be if you wanted to travel by air - then you need passports for the babies/kids for sure. good luck! I was really worried before we hit the road, but honestly, it is such a beautiful drive and the car DVD player kept the kids entertained. There's some good rest stops on the way too - one with a petting zoo for the kids - great place to take a little break! oooh...I am jealous - wish we were going again sooner then next year!PS.... oops! Guess a 2-month-old is not going to enjoy a petting zoo! lol...but for anyone else thinking of driving with the kids - it's a great place to stretch your legs!

US kids don't need a passport to do a land crossing into Canada, either (just like the OP's Canadian kids don't).

Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate...

Now if you've been flying, then YES, passport is necessary.

So nice to hear that others have done the drive with young ones. I know I am a little crazy doing it with a two month old, but when an opportunity to go to Disneyland presents itself....well you know the rest!

We did the drive last October with 4 adults. We made it all the way in one shot, but this time it's just two of us and a baby, so we plan on stopping over night.

It's a relief to know we don't have to order him a passport too! This is a short notice trip so there isn't much time!

I would love to hear where you guys stopped (or will be stopping) on the way... We are making the trip in October :)

Where is the petting zoo??

Thanks!!! :)

We have done the drive MANY times ( I have a fear of flying and DH is AWESOME). Two or three times a year. We usually stop in Pocatello, ID. And we make it to Disney by about 3 pm the next day.

I can't imagine driving all the way through...what time did you get there?
