My kids have always had passports, but we are travelling with friends at the end of January and just found out their daughter doesn't have one.

We are crossing at Detroit and I know she can get across the border with her birth certificate. But will she need photo ID to board the plane? The flight is domestic, DTW-MCO.

Everyone needs passports now .... I dont believe anyone can cross now with just a birth certificate! My daughter is 7 and shes had a passport since she was 2/3

I could be wrong though ...

Also I think you need a letter from the "other" parent of the child if both parents are not traveling ... maybe not required but always seems to make things go smoother from my understanding.

Checked with the TSA website, it appears that a child under 18 is not required to have a passport for a domestic US flight but the TSA recommends that you check with the airline to make sure the child has proper I.d.

Thanks! I will have them call Southwest directly to verify.

You are wrong. We live very close to the border and know that kids do not need passports to cross by land. Everyone needs a passport to cross by air, but lots of families in our area cross without passports for their kids on a regular basis. Our kids have passports for international (beyond USA) travel.

Both her parents are coming on this trip with us!

This is the correct answer. In short, yes, your 10yr old will REQUIRE a passport to travel into the USA. Right off the government of Canada's website... All Canadian children, from newborns to age 16, require their own passport to travel. Children may only be issued a passport with a maximum validity of 5 years. A child’s passport remains valid until it reaches its expiry date, even after the child turns 16

She is not my 10yo, she is a family friend coming on the trip with us. And we are crossing by land into the States before flying domestically, Detroit-Orlando. I can unequivocally tell you that children DO NOT require passports to cross the border. My question is will she need one to fly domestically within the United States? There are conflicting reports about needing photo ID for TSA or adults-only.

Unless the laws have changed the last 3 years (I don't think they have) we crossed at land entry into buffalo, and flew domestically from buf to Florida numerous times with NO passport for the kids. We just had birth certificate .

We fly DTW - MCO every time we fly. When you go through security you only have to present adult passports & everyone's (adult & children) ticket. HTH!

Excellent, thanks very much!

I was surprised when we flew within the US that they didn't even look at my child's ID, just the adults.
We cross often by land with just a birth certificate, but for peace of mind, I would ensure the child had a passport for flying. Wouldn't want to have to deal with not having one if security happened to make it an issue.

Only for air travel. No child under the age of 16 requires a passport to cross the border by land.

No, she will not need a passport. However, you would be well advised to have a letter from her parents that is signed and (and even witnessed by someone else) saying that they give permission for her to travel with you. Sometimes it's not an issue, and sometimes it is. Better to be safe than sorry.

Why would they even risk it, get an emergency passport. You can get them for next day. Believe me my boss didnt notice his childs had expired, was not let in, and this is a 3yr old. Went to passport office that day and had it next day and flew out that day and caught the rest of the family. That was just this past christmas. I would not chance it.

no one needs a passport to fly domestically (either us to us, or canada to canada).

Adults, in both Canada and USA require government issued photo id, for positive identification to fly. Children (including 10 years olds) need no identification to fly.

This is so wrong!!! They have made some considerations for driving across the border, but flying you MUST have a passport. Also it has just come out that some state to state now needs a passport. So if the USA is making its own people have passports to fly domestic, you can bet foreigners, yes that is us, will need them to fly.

We just got back about a month ago. It was 3 days before my 16th birthday and we had no issues getting across/flying with a birth certificate. No questions asked. As long as they have a birth certificate & plane ticket, you're golden.

This is wrong. ANY child of ANY age, flying internationally, MUST have a Nexus card or passport, straight from the US government website: "All Canadian Citizens entering the United States by AIR are required to present a valid passport, or a NEXUS card when departing from a designated Canadian airport."

So just because a couple people have gotten lucky and gotten kids across by air without a passport, does NOT mean you should plan on it. Trying to get a child across without proper identification is irresponsible.

I agree with this - driving across the border is one thing but flying into another country without a passport for every member of your party is honestly just completely irresponsible. I would refuse to take another child if they did not provide a passport for their travel.
