Do Your Kids Wear Lanyards?

Hey first timer here ...What is the deal with the lanyards? Do you bring your own or do you get them from disney? what is the pin thing all about, something about trading? I am lost, but it sound fun, so can someone tell me about this.

Thanks, H

You can certainly buy the lanyards at the parks, but, as with most such items, you'll pay more. We bought a few from an eBay vendor for a good price so that we'll already have them and not pay park prices.

As for pin trading, the basics are: if you have Disney pins (Disney copyright on back), you can trade any pin you have with a cast member for one they are wearing; they must accept all trades. (Some cast members [green lanyards] only trade with guests under 12.) Sometimes pin shops will have pin trading events as well.

You can also trade with other guests, who of course will have their own idea as to the value of any particular pin.

Disney's official pin trading website.

My older three kids 9, 6, & 4 last trip wore lanyards most of the time. I kept their KTTW cards. I ended up with my 4yo's lanyard in my bag off and on. They all loved trading the pins. We have accumulated quite a few pins now since they got some in their stockings. The lanyard full of pins can get pretty heavy. On the next trip I'm going to suggest each of my kids picks a few special pins to leave at home. Then I will try to limit how many they take into the park each day as well. I figure they can leave a few in the hotel room each day and rotate them through the week. That way I don't end up with the weight of a bazillion pins in my bag if they all shed the lanyards in the heat of the day. My 9yo ended up with a sort of burn on the bag of her neck last trip from her lanyard rubbing there all the time. I will probably bring something for that next time, maybe baby powder (not sure what would work).
