I thought I should post a local news report that aired tonight just in case it might help someone here. I found out that my 9 year old should still be in a booster since he is 6 inches shorter than what is recommended for riding without one! I'm going to get him one tomorrow.

CHILDREN's SAFETY in CARS
12/30/03

If you're coming up with your New Year's resolutions for 2004 - how about one that could save your child's life? A car seat inspection saved the lives of two boys who were in the back of a mini van when a truck hit it.

Christine Guarino/PARENT:"Once the seats were in we drove off feeling very safe and the following afternoon we were hit by a Mack truck on the way to Grandma's house"

If the seats hadn't been properly installed?

Christine Guarino/PARENT: "I Don't believe they would have survived that crash."

We often think of babies and toddlers when it comes to child seat safety - but here's a major problem for kids ages four to eight. 85 percent of them who should be in boosters seats - aren't... and that can be catastrophic in a crash.

Dr. Jeff Runge/TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION: "Motor vehicle crash is the leading cause of death for children in America."

The booster seat lifts the child up to ensure the lap and shoulder belts fit properly. The child wearing a lap belt jackknifes wildly sitting as many kids do with just a lap belt across the abdomen.

Dr. Dennis Durbin/CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL: "One of the worst things I ever have to do as an emergency physician is go into a room and tell a parent that their child has either died or suffered a catastrophic injury in an automobile crash and I know that the injury was preventable.

A study by the Children's Hospital of Philadephia found the risk of injury drops nearly 60 percent when a child is in a booster.

Dr. Dennis Durbin/CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL: "Injuries to the spine and to the abdomen which are injuries we know are related to improperly fitting seat belts were virtually eliminated by the use of belt positioning boosters."

Kids up to 12-years-old should be in the back seat babies up to one-years-old and at least 20 pounds should be in an infant seat facing toward the rear. Ages one to four and 20 to 40 pounds should be in a forward-facing child safety seat. Children ages four to eight and around 50 to 80 pounds should be in a child booster seat, and they should stay in the booster until they are at least four feet nine inches tall.

Dr. Jeff Runge/TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION: "One of the most common errors we see if that parents graduate their child to the next level too soon."

The local hospital study provides the first real world data that booster seats dramatically improve child passenger safety, but the only proof this mother needs is playing in the backyard.

Illinois passed a law and as of 1/1/04, every child 8 yrs and under will be in a booster seat and age appropriate car seat or you will receive a ticket. My oldest dd is 8 1/2 and is not in a booster seat now, but youngest dd almost 6 has always been in a booster seat and obviously will continue to do so.

I don't know the weight & height requirements for Illinois but, I can see my 6yo-DD being in a booster til she's 12!

The law in IL is 8 yo or 80 lbs. DD is pretty tiny, so the joke in our house is she will be the only 16 yo taking her test in a booster seat! :teeth:

DSs ride in booster seats. DS 8yo is 53.5" and 53lbs. DS 6yo is 44" and 43 lbs. Some of their friends tease them about riding in baby seats when they see their boosters in our car. On a few occasions, I have told these friends that kids aren't safe in cars until they are 80 pounds and 4 ft. 8 in. I am waiting for some mom to call me to complain that I have scared her child that doesn't normally ride in a booster seat  (unless they are in my car, of course ;) ).

My niece is 7.5, 4 feet tall and 70 lbs and we (my parents and I) still make her ride in a booster when she is with us. She doesn't seem to mind. It raises her up a little so she can see out the window better.

She doesn't ride in a booster when she's with her fruit-loop mother though. In fact, her mom (my ex SIL) also lets her put the shoulder strap behind her back. I will NOT let her do that in my car. And she knows it.

I want to keep her in that booster for as long as possible.

I don't know what the law in CA was. I think at one time it was 6 yrs or 60 lbs but I don't know if that's changed.

My DS is 3.5yrs old. He is 41" and about 44lbs and uses a booster seat. My DD is 11 months. I am not sure she will make the 20lbs when she turns one in about 3wks. So she will be rear facing till she does.
Thanks for posting this and making everyone aware. :D

It astounds me to this day how many parents don't keep their kids in boosters seats..... I can recall seeing kids in my DS's 4yr old preschool going without boosters!! Unbelievable. My DD was the VERY last of her friends to be allowed to go without a booster. She is now 8 1/2, tall for her age. We still use one of those seatbelt adjusters to make it more comfortable for her. My nephew is almost 9 and very small for his age (about the size and weight of my almost 6 year old) and has gone for in excess of a year without a booster except for long car trips. Didn't they ever hear that most car accidents happen within 10 miles of home?!! I have spoken to my SIL many times about this, but they seem to live in fool's paradise!.........................P

My 5yo dd is in a booster seat. The rule is, no seat, no car! Seems like a very simple way to help keep kids safe and it is foolish for parents not to do it. Thanks for the reminder~!

My 12 yr old would still be in a booster seat if they went by weight only.. She is only 72lbs.. and will be 13 in March..

According to the height I should still be in a booster seat. Hmmm wonder if you can get them so I can still drive????? I guess it is good that I passed the weight requirement although at 21 I was under the height and under the weight.

My FIL was a paramedic for 28 years and now that he is retired he runs the car seat safety checks for his area. From his stories and recomendations I will not let me son in a car without a booster seat.
He is a small-fry too and only weighs 40 lbs at 6 years old so he will be in a booster until he's 12. ;) :hyper: ::yes::

I kept mine in boosters until they were 9 years old. They still don't fit the weight, but they did pass "the seat belt test" that came in my new car.....can they sit upright with their legs bent at the knee properly...not legs stuck out because they are too short. I went ahead and let them out at 9. They had been the only kids in their classes for at least 4 years still in seats!

We used to say that if we did wait for the them to reach the proper weight, they'd have to use boosters when they went to their high school proms.

Don't worry, our DD will be there right along with her. At a little over 4yo she's just over 3' tall and between 28-29lbs. We still take her seat on planes because the recommended weight for an airline seat is 40lb.

I think in Kentucky it is 40 lbs and 4 feet tall. DD, 6, only weighs around 30lbs.....she still has a way to go. DD, 3.5, will pass her up.

How about the high-back boosters? I know there is a limit on them, I *think* it is when their shoulders are above the back of the booster. DS7 (53lb, 50") is still in a high back booster but coming close to growing out of it. DD5 is in the high back booster with plenty of time, and DD3 is still in a regular car seat with 5 point harness (33 lb, 40").

My son also gets made fun of in the booster seat. ALOT of people give it up after preschool, I guess they think they are big enough in Kindergarten not to need one. :(

PA State Law now requires up to age 8/80 lbs be in a booster seat. My 12yo is only 89lbs! The old law was to be in a car seat to age 4.

In ME it is 8 years 80lbs law as well. DD is 6 48 inches 48 lbs. She will NOT get into a car unless she has a booster seat. She told me the other day that she loves her car seat and asked if it was ok that she stay in until she's 16!

I see a lot of children without car seats, I still see kids in the front seat! Hello!!!!

Safety First!

DD is 8 1/2 and still in a booster. She has quite a bit to grow to get out too! She does not mind and even likes her seat. Neither child is allowed to ride in the front passenger seat either. I don't know even one of her friends who is still in a seat though. She told me that she is still in hers because we love her! :D Smart kid.

I think some kids have an exceptionally strong sense of self-preservation! When I told my ds that I was going to get him a booster after he's been out of one for almost a year, he was totally fine with it. That is, after I told him about the report and the requirements. He said he has no problem with it because he doesn't want to get hurt.
NONE of my neighbors have used cars seats or booster seats since I've known them. I just don't get it.
