Do you work in a "cube farm"? What irks you most?

Well my office/dept. is very young most are in their 20's and I'm the old lady of the bunch.... anyway, that bugs me, but that's a different thread.

Anyway, they are always bickering with one another, the way high schoolers do.... "ok, so and so, shut up!.... "no, you shut up", "no you shut up"! That kind of stuff, it always starts out kind of playful, but then digresses from there.

I've actually just turned around and said.... "STOP!!!! I feel like I'm home with my frickin kids!!!!

The cubical life! (Sigh)

--How about a guy who uses speaker phone? He presses the speaker phone button and dials, then keeps it on when talking with the person! IT'S LOUD!

--I use to sit next to this guy who talked on the phone all the time about his personal life! I can tell you he's going thru custody battle with his ex-wife. I've also heard him talk with his lawyer over the phone on many occasions.

As someone who suffers from explosive sneezing, I'm sorry that it bugs you, but there's really nothing we can do about it. Sometimes you just have to sneeze ...

You are absolutley right...this is nothing you (or the person near me can help)...I actually giggle about it when he does it and ask him "Seriously - how many brain cells do you kill off with that sneeze?" My apologies for what I said about explosive sneezing.

And what's up with the whistlers? Now - I can't whistle, so maybe that's why it bugs me...but to sit at your desk and just "whistle why you work?" No - unless you have 6 other buddies and you're in a diamond mind...don't do it!!! ;)

Thought of another one. Those people that are constantly sniffing. Is it too much to ask for you to get a tissue and blow??? On that same note, I am also perturbed by the sniffers that won't invest $2 for their own box of Kleenex to keep at their desk, so they constantly borrow (or take) them from someone else!

and blow it in the bathroom please...

This is something my mother instilled in me...she kept a box of tissues in the kitchen, but you had to blow your nose in the bathroom down the hall. Maybe it's just me...

(and yes - I seem to bet the provider of tissues for all of those around me AND the cleaning crew at night!)

OMG, this thread has me LOL. I have never even worked in a cubicle and I can relate to the annoyances. I confess, I am an explosive sneezer...I really wish there were a cure...

I have to say, I don't know how yall do it, I think I would go crazy if I had so many people (in such close proximity) all day long.

I have been to a few construction sites with my DH, and have seen the cubes being put into place, I always wondered what it was like to actually deal with that day in and day out...it looks like a rat maze....(no offense meant by that, LOL)

The worst part, is when you're in your cube and some person comes over and starts talking to you & just won't go away...YOU HAVE NOWHERE TO RUN!!!!

Please have mercy on us

I have sat next to or very near this one woman for over ten years. Every morning at break time she eats a container of yogurt. When she gets to the bottom, she furiously scraps the bottom and sides with her spoon for what seems like several minutes. That sound really grates on my nerves after hearing it for sooooo long.

What irks me is when I need to make a personal call - like to the dr. I have to speak in "code" to describe my problem. Or when I am eating at my desk and people come up and start asking me something work related. Dont they see that I am at lunch? Do I bug them when they are eating in McDonalds???

Very Funny subject. I love it. Keep'em coming. I'm in a cube but I don't have to be there all the time. You can hear a pin drop in my area. It's awful. It's so quiet I have to make an effort to remember to chew quietly. Hahahahah One guy close by talks as if his cube is soundproof. You can hear every conversation he has.
It's hysterical...to a point. I don't even like to use the phone from my office. Luckily there are other phones available if I need to make a personal call.

All your stories are great...I especially liked the "crop dusting" one.:bounce:

When I was cubed up with Gateway tech support we really didn't have too many problems. We would actually blow up a HUGE beachball and hit it around the room. And then when it was about 1 in the morning (I usually worked till 2 or 3 in the morning) we would throw a football around the huge place. It was fun!

A few times me and a few friends (who worked on different corners of the building) would do our "cat call". One of us not on a call would do a loud MMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW followed a few minutes later by another one, then another one until about 10 people would do it almost simultaniously... ALMOST got fired for that one! :teeth:

LOL

JoNo...that's classic! Never seen that one before!

This thread is so funny! It makes me imagine the cube farm people at work today, self conscious about making too much noise, cowering in their cubes... Ha ha ha ha!:)

Psst... JoNo, I'm familiar with Think Geek! Uh, oh, does that make me one?:p

I LOVE that link!! Mmmm....dehydrated caffeinated meatloaf... I know what I'm having for dinner! :p

Sorry for the momentary thread hijack, stinkerbelle. Back to cube farm pet peeves... :D

How about the people who see you on the phone and just stand there?!
Go away, I'm on the phone!

The thing that aggravates me the most at this moment is the negative attitude at work. I tend to think positive most of the time in my personal life, however I am sucked into the negative so much at my office. We moved recently and have about 1/2 the office space we used to and it feels like our cubes are stacked on top of each other. There are no personal phone calls and then we come to my biggest complaint about my office.

We have a demoted former middle management person about seven years shy of his retirement. He does as little as possible except when it comes to the job of knowing everyone's business. He literally sits leaning back in his chair with his hands behind his head absorbing everything that is said. He uses personal or business information to gossip, which he somehow feels makes him more personable:mad: He is a useless employee that they decided to hide in our department and it is very frustrating.
