Do you wash your sheets or try them on first?

I just bought a new 11" temperpedic mattress and bought some of those jersey sheets for it. the sheets said fit mattresses up to 15".
I brought the sheets home from Target and washed them and put them on the mattress. they were too tight, they fit over the mattress but were so tight that they pressed down the edges of the mattress. I don't know if they sheets were tight before I washed them or after because I didn't try them on first, who tries on their sheets before washing?
I brought them back to Target with the receipt and Target gave me a hard time about returning them. They told me that they won't accept merchandise that has been washed.
I asked what they do if someone buys clothes and washes them and they fall apart and was told they don't accept any items that have been washed.
They offered me an exchange but the sheets didn't fit, why would I want another set?
Two people behind me both were chiming in saying that the policy is stupid and they would have washed the sheets before putting them on the bed too.
I finally got them to give me a gift card with the amount I paid for the sheets but was told that they would never do that for me again.

I always try on the sheets before I wash them now.

I once washed some before trying them on and the store wouldn't take them back even though it clearly stated on the packaging that it would fit my bed.

So sorry this happened to you.

At least they gave you a gift card.

Interesting! I had an issue with returning sheets to Target, too. Mine were "package to the bed", but my husband noticed missing thread at the top hem when he got in. Target insisted they were used because we had removed them from the package. Okay...

Anyways, like I said, I don't wash first.

My experience with jersey sheets is that they stretch out after use so after a night or two they are almost hanging off the bed.

I wash my sheets before I use them.

I had the same problem with Sears. My sister got my daughter princess sheets that were supposed to be full sized. I washed them, tried to put them on and realized they were for a twin bed. I tried to exchange them, but Sears wouldn't take them back because they were "used" even though I explained that I just washed them before I put them on, they were never slept on. I didn't even want money back, I just wanted the right size, but they wouldn't budge.

I could never put sheets on my bed that weren't washed.

My mom had this problem a while ago and she had washed the sheets too, the store (in the UK) gave her her money back no problem, but they suggested that she should try them on first next time.

I would probabl wash them first too!

I never "try on" sheets before I wash them. I guess I am gullible and assume they are the correct size when I buy them. Plus I want a "clean laundry" smell to sleep on, not a factory chemically smell the sheets have when they're new in the package. I would be upset though, if I bought a set of sheets that stated the correct size, but didn't fit right and I would want my money back too. I'm glad they finally gave you a gift card, but they should have just refunded your money right up front.
