when you signed up for facebook

I thought I posted this before but can't find it.

Due to identity theft this makes me nervous.

I put my birth day but not year and I use a different (family) last name than my real one, so I'm not too concerned.

not on facebook but I NEVER use my actual birth date UNLESS it is something legal................:thumbsup2

Yep... I trust my friends. Most of them already know when my birthday is anyway.

I don't list my entire birthdate for the reason you mentioned. Perhaps I read it on the post you are referring to but I have either left off the year or the date (I forget which) so that viewers don't have complete information. Somebody recently friended me who lists their entire date plus she has her address listed. I have contemplated whether it would be appropriate for me to say something since we don't really know one another. Identity theft is so prevalent.

I don't post the year but the month and day are visible. :thumbsup2

When people register for Facebook, do they have to enter a credit card or Driver's Licence number? How does Facebook know people aren't making up names & identities when creating accounts? Like can someone just sign up as Jane Smith III when she is really a he, (and a male predator,) or as the OP said, someone out for identity theft?

Do you really think anyone would sign up at a site that asked for that information???

They don't. But if someone had a made up name and you didn't know them (I have friends that use aliases, for example) why would you be friends with them and allow them access to your info?????

I don't even have a Facebook page but I get friends of friends email requests all the time asking me to join their Facebook page. I also know a few authors and empowerment coaches who invite people to join their pages to get tips and the latest info, and share a community experience, or whatnot. They have lots of "fans" on their wall (or whatever it is called.)

To me, Fb seems to be a lot about just becoming popular, significant, "famous" on FB and collecting a lot of Friends or in the case of the authors I know, Fans. I would think there are people trolling around in these more public pages, hoping to gather info from the unsuspecting, saying "Hey, I'm a fan of Loren's too. :thumbsup2 (Loren has got over 3000 fans on her wall.)

Also, what about all those games like Mafia Wars? I heard you actually need to get on teams to try to win the game. So, people may be likely to accept people to their page.

There was a recent thread here where the OP's DH found out he may be the father of a teen, with a woman he slept with years ago. She INFORMED him on his FB page. Another person here kept getting FB updates on her ex when he was creating lovey-dovey posts to his current GF. that's just TWO examples where people let all kinds of people access their pages.

I don't use Facebook, but I never put my real birth date online for anything.. I either jumble it up or use something entirely different..

There are many people who use FB in that way; there are many people who use their day to day lives in that way! I bet they overlap. :)

My info is hidden; you have to be my Friend to get to it. And I don't accept Friends willynilly.

I went into FB shortly after my 20th HS reunion b/c a bunch of my old friends were on it. Before that we were torturing mutual friends by having huge "reply all" emails between some of us, and I think we switched to FB so that the people not interested in that topic wouldn't have 8000 emails going to their Inbox, LOL.

It's the way you use FB, not FB itself, that makes it good or bad.

As for Mafia Wars, it's an app, and apps pull info from your account, including the info of your Friends. I don't use apps. I don't play the games or send lil green sprouts, nor do I accept them...ignore ignore ignore to all those requests, and I routinely ignore Friend requests from people I either don't know in any way, shape or form, or from those with whom I do not wish to be Friends. Easy!

I don't use facebook but I also don't care about displaying my birthdate.

See, July 2, 1987.

My credit is so awful no one will be able to get anything anyway, I know I can't...
