I saw a post about insuring both a cruise and point stay, and it got me t o wondering how many people actually use the DVC trip insurance and how often.

We have never used it in 13+ years of DVC membership. I almost did it when my grandma was having health issues, but I decided my guests would go on the trip anyway, so no need to insure. As it turned out, Grandma passed before the trip anyway. SO...Let's see if a poll will give us some idea about how many here use it.

THIS IS A MULTIPLE ANSWER POLL. IF YOU HAVE NEVER BUT MIGHT USE TRIP INSURANCE, YOU COULD CHECK BOTH OF THOSE OPTIONS.

Never, I see little reason for it as we plan fairly well for most events

We never have but if we ever go again in late Jan. early Feb. I might be tempted. The roads were so bad 24 hours before we left that it took my wife 4 hours to get home from work, a trip that normally takes 45 minutes or less. We were not using our local airport so we were looking at a 2.5 hour drive. We had lost power and the whole nine yards.

The power was restored and the roads cleared just enough for us to make it but right up until we left we we really thought the trip was not going to happen.

That was a little too close for comfort.

I put that I would consider using it at some point. We've never used it, and may never use it, but I'll never say never. Oh wait...

We use it for cruising, because there are so many variables to consider, but never have for the land portion of a trip.

I've bought it for a few of our all family vacations. Mainly for the BC and then the WDW portion with the majority of our family.

Not for DVC trips.
If we have a cruise we fly in just day before during winter months, yes. If we fly in week before, no.

We haven't ever bought trip insurance. I work with insurance companies and having insurance doesn't guarantee reimbursement. I have done my homework.

I always insure cruises and expensive vacations (like to Hawaii). I have also insured trips when traveling near the height of hurricane season or in winter when there could be winter storm delays & cancellations. I do not ALWAYS use it though. But if we have money invested in flights & exursions, usually yes. This year I didn't buy it for our trip to HHI. We're driving and I am hoping the weather cooperates (hope I'm not jinxing anything now). I will insure our vaca next summer to Europe once I book flights & hotels to bookend around the cruise.

And...you insure for catastrophic events that would create a financial burden. In the case of most domestic trips this is never the case, throw in DVC and it really becomes hard to justify a catastrophic financial burden.

Now you make me feel like I'm shirking! We've had more than few trips to Hawaii, and I've never once insured any of them. I guess we aren't the insurance for trips kind of people.

Diane, it's so funny you have this poll up here because I've been doing the debate as to whether or not I want to get the trip insurance for my trip to Disneyland in January. Normally, I don't purchase it, but flying out of Boston in late January has me wonder if I should get it.

I think DVC is flexible enough that if you had to arrive late, they'd accommodate you as long as you call ahead. Of course, you are in Boston....;) I know you guys can seem to have worse delays than we even do here in the frozen north!

LOOK at my screen name!! I am ANAL ANNIE!! :rotfl: I can't help myself!

I have had friends who have been burned on vacations before so I'd rather shell out $50 or whatever & feel like I have SOME SORT of protection. A good friends husband had a medical emergency on their honeymoon cruise in which the ship had to be diverted so he could be evacuated to the closest hospital in Freeport. The ship wasn't originally going to the Bahamas but she spent the week sitting in the hospital by his bed. Had another who's sister got stranded in Chicago during a snow storm - the entire family missed their winter break trip to the Bahamas. The flights just never caught up. But the medical evacuation thing is a big reason to insure a cruise - those can cost $30K or so if you have to be air lifted. Something like that would pretty much do us in!! :) Even if it's not something big like that I still don't want to LOSE our money. It's too hard to come by!!

I have never purchased trip insurance for a DVC stay. Given that we drive down from GA, it just doesn't seem like it would be that helpful for us. If we did have to cancel at the very last minute, I guess we would just be out the points.

I'm about to take my 1st cruise ever this October on DCL, and I purchased some trip insurance for that. I didn't get the full-service insurance through DCL, as we'll be driving to Port Canaveral and most of it seemed aimed at travel delays or lost luggage due to airlines. I did purchase an inexpensive medical policy for our group that covers illness and emergency evacuation. It just gives me a little peace of mind for not much money (I think it was a total of $60 for 4 adults).

Looks like I am more "normal" than I thought. I guess I'm a bit surprised that so far only 1 always gets TI. Annie, but for you, we might not have anyone on that one!:rotfl:

Actually, that one's not me! LOL..I checked the 2nd one - that I have gotten it at least 1 time!! I don't ALWAYS get it. We didn't get it for our spring break trip or for this summer to HHI. :goodvibes We're about 50/50 on whether or not we get it. We get it when we're shelling out a lot for airfare or if I'm worried about snowstorm delays or hurricanes.

I don't use the DVC trip insurance because I figure that a delay in getting to WDW will still get me there. If forced to cancel, I wouldn't get my points back with the insurance, anyway, just a reimbursement, at best. Illness could be taken care of locally.

Now for all my cruise vacations I always purchase insurance since a delay would mean either no cruise or a costly catch-up to the ship and medical care/evacuation, if needed, would be exhorbitant.

Just my own personal rationale.
