Do You Unplug Small Appliances? Almost Had Tragedy!

Years ago a friend of mne had her toaster oven turn on. Fortunately she was home. The worst thing that happened was the plastic bag from the bread she had on top it melted.

That's all it took for me to start unplugging all of my small appliances. I make sure that everyone in the family is trained to do the same.

I am very anal about keeping not just kitchen appliances unplugged, but my hairdryer too. A former boss told me the story of a family that was about to sell their house when the kid left a hairdryer on a towel, somehow the towel caught fire and lots of damage to the main bathroom.

My family makes constant fun of me. I may print this thread out and show them it.

That will be the hardest part--retraining my family. Well, that and putting something in my toaster oven to cook, coming back to eat my heated food only to find that I forgot to plug it in. :teeth:

Tell your family that I have no doubt that if we hadn't of been home yesterday afternoon that we would have had a house fire that could have seriously damaged or destroyed our house and we could have lost our 2 cats and 2 dogs. Better to be cautious than to lose everything! Doesn't mean a person should be paranoid, but I don't think that unplugging a fire hazard is being paranoid. Besides that, our families needs something to tease us about, right? ;)

Here's some info. http://www.coned.com/customercentral/electricsafety.asp

I bet that there is a government source that lists which appliances have a greater chance of catching on fire and should be unplugged.

I have a large toaster oven/bread machine combo (toaster oven the size of a mid-size microwave oven), Food Saver and can opener plugged in all the time because I use them nearly everyday. Everything else is unplugged when not in use - hand mixer, crock-pot, food processor. They are used less frequently.

The toaster is always unplugged. I read that more house fires start from toasters than anything else.
