when picking up take out food? I just picked up lunch and there was a take out tip jar:confused:

No I never have but I have seen the same thing at a few places here.

No I do not. If they brought it to my car I would :p I do tip the pizza delivery guy

Sometimes, depends on the service.

No way, I don't tip when I call in an order, drive to the take out place, go in and pick up my food. I tip when they do some or all of these chores for me but when I do all the running then I just pay for the food.

Not if we go to the restaurant to pick it up....:D

When I stop for coffee at the Drunkin Donuts near my house I throw a quarter into the jar--they're always so nice and friendly, and what's a lousy quarter? To them if everyone gave them a quarter it would mean a much better standard of living, they are all immigrants and very hard workers who I know don't make much.

Sometimes, if the person has been extra helpful. If they are surly they can just forget it.

I also tip the person who takes my groceries to the car. Those young people work really hard.

I'm a pushover when it comes to tipping.

Only if I don't want to bother with the coins they give me as change. ;)

Usually, no -- although I'll occasionally put a little something in the tip jar at our favorite restaurant when picking up some takeout. :)

No way. I especially love the tip jars at Starbucks drive thru - give me a break.

Yes, I usually tip if they are attentive, but if they leave me standing there waiting instead of checking on my order I don't.
I usually go to the same places and when they see me they check. It's college kids working around here,so they need the tips.

I was at the coffee shop in the mall the other day, when I realized I only had exact change.
So I went through my purchases, and I tipped with a Yankee Candle votive ($1)
The girl behind the counter was very thankfull for getting such a neat tip. :)

Not for take-out. Bear in mind that we B.C. people pay 15% tax on all restaurant food. I usually end up paying a tip on the tax since I calculate the tip from the total bill.

Ditto, Steve H.

I once saw a tip jar next to the cash register at an Entenman's Bakery Outlet. All the cashier did was ring up the few items & bag them. I thought, "Hmmm...can't blame a gal for trying."

Someone takes your groceries to your car for you! Wow, here they barely want to put the groceries in a bag for you.

I just don't understand the concept.

There are certain things that are just expected when I order take out food.

I expect it to be as I ordered it, the right temperture, and to be treated with courtesy, a smile and a thank you.

Otherwise, I'll take my business elsewhere.

Table service is a whole other matter.

Not as a rule - reason being that at these types of restaurants the people behind the counter are making an hourly wage WAY above what a waitress makes in a sit-down restaurant..

Heck - some of the donut places and such around here pay the counter people MORE per hour than I was making as a cook in a school cafeteria!

In some respects I actually think it's kind of tacky.. If a person should be tipped just for ringing up your item, handing it to you, taking your money, shouldn't there be "tip" jars at every register in Walmart too???
