Do You Tip For Take-Out Food?

I tip for carry out, if i see a tip jar. I even tip when i get my coffees.

However, i must say, i don't think it is right to have just the casheir get the tips.. IMO, they should be split fairly b/w all those working on / behind the TO counter.
My first job was at a chinese rest. working TO, and we always split the tips.. Why should just the cashier be able to keep them all? When there are others "behind the scenes" working on filling that persons order.

They rotate through the different behind the counter jobs, so my DD might be a cashier one day, but another day she'll be answering phones and she won't be the one to get the tips, so it all evens out. The cooks are on a different pay scale and earn more, so they aren't a part of it.

My 17 year old daughter works the to-go orders at our local Red Robin restaurant and will often make $30-40 dollars a night in tips. When she works to-gos she is only being paid $3.50 an hour because it is a tipping position.
When she clocks in as a Hostess she is paid $8.00 an hour because it is not.

I thought it was illegal to pay a minor less than minimum wage regardless of whether it's a tipped position or not? I am pretty sure that I learned they had to be paid minimum wage and then the employer could choose whether or not they got the tips. Anyone know??

I tip 20% carry out from a restaurant. But if it's from a food court, no.

At some places I do. At a local bar for example that offers take out as I know that the waitress has to take care of not just her tables but me so I give her a coule of dollars for helping me and getting my order all together as I know it's taken away from the other part of her job.

Last summer my DD waited tables and earned $2.13 an hour. Her tips were supposed to bring her up past minimum wage. That is the usual wage for waiting tables - at least in our town.

We usually tip at carry out, carside pick up and even Dunkin Donuts drive through. I guess the only place I dont is McDonalds if I am ever unlucky enough to have to eat there (yuk).

I tip because I know how it is to struggle to pay the bills. I feel blessed not to be in that position anymore, but when you are making a wage that low a dollar or two can make a difference.

Maybe I should stop being so cheap start giving a little. I just don't like to at places where the person really isn't doing anything but handing me my food or scooping me an ice cream. But I suppose if there's some effort being put into it and most certainly if it's a wait person who I know has other responsibilities and is getting paid a small hourly wage, that's a different story. Usually, though, we get take-out Chinese food (from a take-out place, not a restaurant) or pizza so the take food from a restaurant is new to me.

I tip at Sonic and at pizza places but mcdonalds, burger king that kind of place nope don't tip. Unless there is a waitress to take your order at the table they make minimum wage or better depending on how long they have worked there. Waitresses don't usually make mimimum wage because tips are supposed to make up the difference which is really redundant to me. I don't think it should be legal to do that but it is.

Do I tip for take out, not if I am going in to get it. However, if it is being brought to my car, then yes I will tip. (And yes, I tip at Sonic).

In my opinion tipping has gotten way out of control. You see tip jars all over the place at places that years ago you would laugh at seeing a tip jar on the counter. All of these tip jars have really turned me off. I do tip, and for good service I tend to tip well, but there are just some places (like Starbucks or the local ice cream place) that I don't feel a tip is necessary. Years ago when I was in HS I worked at Burger King, is making burgers or fries or drinks much different than making a coffee or ice cream? I don't think so. You would never dream of tip jars at BK or Mickey D's. I think in some cases employers have changed their wages because of tipping jars, etc and putting the burden on the consumer to pay the wages (via tips) that the employers don't wish to pay. I just find tip jars a form of begging and I really dislike them. If a person desires to leave a tip for good service than so be it, they don't need a tip jar to guilt them into it, they will give it freely if the service warrants it.

Yes for casual dining restaurants like Applebee's and the like. Not as much as I would for table service, but I do think they deserve a little tip for taking my order, making sure it's right, bringing it to the car, etc.

I tip at regular places, but places like DD or ice cream place or something like that never. I have tipped at Sonic when I would park and sit there, but the Sonic I usually would go to had a window where you would drive up pay and get your food, well now they closed the window because the car hops were missing out on tips and now we have to wait longer to get our food. :confused3

Now Fuddruckers, I have to get my food and get my drink and there is someone coming by telling me if there is something they can do for me, but if I have to get my food and my drinks and my refills, I don't tip.
