When you order carry out, do you tip? I'm not saying pizza, but other restaurants (like Famous Dave's, Chili's, etc).

We aren't sure what is expected and usually done.

If they bring it out to my car, then I tip. If I go in and get it, I don't tip.

I do the same thing as Sherri. If they bring it to the car like at Sonic I tip but not if I go in to get it.

I'm a waitress and we do quite a bit of "to go" orders where I work, and when customers tip it is always very much appreciated.
Especially if the order contains several meals. They are usually called in and it takes time to take the order and put it together. Not all people tip on "to go" orders but we do appreciate those who do. We certainly don't expect a tip like what we receive when we are waiting on in-house customers, but a dollar or two is nice.

I tip. I figure someone put the meal together and boxed it up fo rme. Also, even though I'm paying for the meal, I am happy just not to have to cook.

we tip pizza delivery, we tip at sonic, we tip at all table service restaurants, we have been known to tip at take out , depending on the restaurant. some of the restaurants that prepare mostly take out instead of table service we dont tip. if its an unussual place for trake out, ie our local mexican restauant and we have to sit and wait , we wil leave a tip.

If I go in and pick it up, I don't tip, but if it's a curbside takeaway type of deal (like Outback) where they bring the food to the car, I tip about 10 percent. I always wondered if that was too high/too low though.

I always tip. Used to be a waitress. It's not "expected" for carryouts, but certainly appreciated, since someone must go thru the process of boxing the food. And I always ask for extra breadsticks, bread, condiments and I like to reward the person for going the extra mile for me. Now that I have kids, the bringing-the-food-to-my-car deal is much more valuable and I tip even more. ::yes::

If we do curbside pickup where they bring the food to your car them we tip. If we go into the place to pick up the take out order we do not tip. If we have food delivered to our door we also tip.

In NYC, where almost everything can be carried out, it never occurs to most of us to tip. Then when I moved to CA, I couldn't believe all the blatant, large tip jars for almost everything, including breathing - if they could get away with it! It made me feel guilty for ordering take out there.

I don't mind tipping now & then for great service or if the order is unusually large, but I hate feeling extorted into giving one.:p

I guess being a hairdresser and ex bartender.....
I tip everyone for everything.......and very well I might add!

if the person brings the food out yes I tip(plus I tip pizza delivery and the like along with Sonic)

I only take out from a couple of restaurants. I usually tip at the Mexican restaurant(where I go to the bar and order the food to go), but at the Chinese restaurant where I call in my order, I never tip. There is no tip jar at the Chinese place, and I only deal with the cashier.

We only tip at a bar, restaurant or if food is delivered to our door. We have never been to Sonic where they bring it to your car, but if we had we would tip. Everyone who tips because they box up your order, do you tip at the store because the bagger bagged your groceries? Or do you tip at the department store because the associate wrapped your purchases in tissue paper and put the items, boxes and receipt in the bag? I tip very well when I get a service rendered, i.e. a manicure, hair done, etc. but will not tip every tom dick and harry just because. To each their own I suppose and yes I used to bus tables when I was younger and worked at a hamburger place; very few if any people tipped.

Yes, there's tip jars at all take-outs around here
I usually put in $1...not at Dunkin Donuts though, unless it's one of DS's high school mates that waits on me.
