Now, I should preface this with, we have just moved to this area from New England, so I am not familiar with what might be normal regional custom, but...

Last night, at 8pm, in the dark, some woman knocked on my door with a clipboard full of papers and a photo of her child. She was asking for $3 for some sort of ticket to sponsor her daughter in the state christmas pageant contest. She was not from our neighborhood, as far as I can tell (I do not know all the neighbors yet) and she as bring driven around the street by someone else.

a) I have never heard of people soliciting others to sponsor your childs pageant entry - has anyone else.

b) It was 8pm and dark and I dont know you, why do you need to knock on my door?

Obviously I politely declined, but still thought it was a bit odd.

I've never heard of such a thing. I'd of told her that I'd rather my money go to an organization that actually helps people, not a beauty pageant. That woman was ballsy.

This sounds like something her daughter should be doing herself. But even so, I hate door to door solicitors. I tell them no before they can even finish their schpeal. I get solicitors for magazines in my apartment building once a month. I think they live in the building but I still tell them "You do know there is no soliciting in the building." I'm so mean. :)

There have been some weird solicitations going on lately. I had a teenage boy come to my door, all cocky, saying he was trying to raise money for his soccer team to go to a tournement in Maui! This was less than two weeks after Katrina. Get this, he was selling books and they were "only" $39.99 each!!! I read later that this is akin to those magazine scams where companies will drop van loads of kids off in neighborhoods. The article even quoted the script he used. Needless to say, my DD gets her books from the library, not some shady organization!

This is not a regional thing. Kids do have to get 'sponsors' for pageants to offset the cost of entering but they are usually friends and family not strangers. Weird, very weird.

I tell these people that all my donations go to the American Red Cross and the USO.

I know that pageant contestants usually get sponsorships to offset costs, but normally they go to family, friends and businesses, especially dress shops, salons and shoe stores to get donated items. I have never heard of door to door soliciting, that is rude and sounds a bit like a scam

My first thought was scam too...never heard of this before.

SC Minnie - I've never been asked by anyone let alone strangers to sponsor a pageant...wasnt sure if it was custom in this area. From the responses clearly not custom to ask door to door!

I typically dont agree to any door to door sales, even the cute little kids. I would rather sponsor a niece, nephew or friends kids, who I know and know where the money should be going.

I think it is weird. I would politely decline.

(I noticed you are originally from Rutland, which is only 2 towns over from me! It is wicked cold right now, in case you were wondering!!)

I miss Rutland!!! Its still wierd to me that its not cold in SC. I told my Mom I get all confused....I watch the Today show and typically I would use them to gauge how many layers to wear! I swear there have been a few days so far I have been convinced its been blustery only to walk out into the heat!

Wierd also is the fact that I am going to miss snow!!! And Rutland could do snow good!
