Employees like to buy for their boss. I manager 145 stores and about 1/4 buy me a gift. I do not return one (I would be broke buying for all of my managers). I always say it wasn't necessary however, they WANT to do it.

There is nothing wrong with it, it is a gracious employee.

He needs to say thank you and move on....letting it be known as inappropriate will damage relationships and offend people.

Just my 2 cents.

I think that some people really do believe in the spirit of giving at Christmas, and she probably gets a wonderful feeling of satisfaction while planning and thinking about the 'surprise' she leaves for your DH every year.

Since it is "anonymously" given, I agree with the PPs that there is nothing inappropriate about it.

I never refuse liquor, whether I like it or not. I agree that cognac has it's place in the kitchen, even if it doesn't make it's way to a brandy sniffer. lol

Cognac makes good holiday cocktails, too. You could always have it at a dinner party as a punch with oranges and cloves.

It's a nice gesture. You wouldn't think anything about it if it were say.. sausages. lol

Actually, if a co-worker gave me sausages for Christmas, I'd be thinking a whole lot about it!!!

In fact, I could see a thread on the DIS about it now...

Without reading all the other posts, I'd have to say that this is not innappropriate. Perhaps the woman came from a company where the standard Christmas gift to a boss was a bottle of Cognac? I see nothing wrong with that, except maybe if your DH hinted that he didn't like Cognac she'd find another bottle of liquor or other "standard" gift like fruit or chocolate to give as her stock Christmas gift.

Perhaps, since your DH is diabetic, she doesn't know what else to get him and may see this as an opportunity for him to regift the Cognac to someone else?

I'm not going to read anything else into it unless/until I get more information. Based on your first post, I see nothing wrong with this.

I gave my boss a bottle of Kahlua.....she gave me a bottle of red wine . I think this is a nice women, As previously mentioned she can't give baked goods because of your husband's diabetes.

An anonymous gift could even mean a few employees chipped in for it... no reason to feel threatened or think it is inappropriate IMO. Back when I was working I gave all my bosses, who happened to be male, chocolates from Swiss Colony and my VP boss a bottle of 15 year single malt scotch. There was nothing behind it at all... these people were simply the people who did the hiring/firing and handed out the raises and as such a bit of kissing up seemed appropriate.

Just a thought, if a woman has been around your DH for 5 years and never made any advances beyond an anonymous bottle of something he doesn't even like I tend to think she isn't into him at all. As for picking up stuff for him at the store, they were there and knew what he needed so they got it for him... to me that's just being normal and friendly. I would personally do that for anyone and I never ask for money back for small stuff like that.. it just seems cheap.

I don't see its as being inappropriate, my line leader gave everyone a bottle of wine for christmas. We all had a collection and got him £130.31. For my fellow workers (all male) I brought a box of chocolates as my gift to them and they got the same for me there is nothing behind these gifts and I know the wifes of all the married one have no problem with the gifts either.
