Do you think there will be new iPhone this summer?

I was considering updating my iPhone 3GS to a 4S. Do you think they'll release something new this summer or do you think it might be a while before we see any iPhone changes? Thanks!

I'm thinking there will be new models this summer. That's what I'm waiting for on my phones. Right now we have a iPhone 4 (not GS) and will be eligible for an upgrade in a few months. So my plan is to hold off on the upgrade until the new model is announced.

I recently upgraded from a 3GS to a 4S and asked myself the same question -- to upgrade now or wait for the next release (presumably the iPhone 5?). Here's what finally tipped my hand:

The way I saw it, I could find myself waiting for the Next Awesome iPhone for a long time, especially since everything I've read about the iPhone 5 has been speculation rather than official information. Instead, I did made a list of everything I really wished my 3GS would do that it currently didn't (or didn't do well enough IMO). I then asked myself how many of these things the iPhone 4S would accomplish. Lo and behold, the 4S met almost all of my criteria, and the ones it didn't weren't all that big of a deal to me. I then played with a friend's 4S for a while and really liked it. Two days later, I was at the Apple Store picking up a new phone.

I have to wait until late May to upgrade from my Android.

I want to take an iPhone to take to Europe when I go in mid June. More than likely, the new iPhone will not be released until July or August.

Personally, I don't really care. I've had four Androids and three Blackberries. All of them have been trouble from the word go, so I can't wait to get an iPhone and be (at least somewhat) worry free.

Verizon iPhones do not work in Europe...only AT&T iPhones work in Europe.

Verizon uses CDMA technology and almost all of Europe uses GSM technology...which is what AT&T uses.

I recently dreamed about the bill I received after using my iPhone in Italy. :faint:

I think I'm preparing for iPhone withdrawal.

Thanks Kevin!

I didn't know that! Thankfully I use AT&T.

:thumbsup2

I think my impatience is going to win...I'm leaning towards the 4S. I'm with AT&T, and when I got my 3GS, they only had one data plan -$30 per month. When my DS got his iPhone 4, they had two plans (I think he got the $25 one), but neither was unlimited. I wonder if they'll let me keep my unlimited plan. I'd hate to lose that!

However, the 4S is, from what I understand, a "world phone." That means it has both CDMA and GSM chipsets in it. So, at least in theory, it should be able to work in a GSM area (although you would have to buy a sim card).

Quite honestly, no one knows when the new iPhone will make its debut. By going something like 15 months between the announcement of the 4 and the 4S, Apple showed it wasn't going to be bound to an arbitrary cycle of announcing a new iPhone every June like all the previous models.

The folks that were with us in England, France and Italy (within the last 4 months) were not able to get phone service through Verizon.

I dont know if any of them had 4S phones.

I had the iPhone 4 via AT&T. And before I left for England, I bought a nice big ol' international data package. And I was able to tweak it after I got back without any problems since I was well within my billing period. It worked great. :)

I've only upgraded my iPhone on the "regular" numbers. I went from 3 to 4, but I didn't get the 3S or 4S. I'm fine with my phone until the next upgrade or two.

I wouldn't mind buying the monthly Int'l data package but I thought AT&T also charged a per Mb fee on top of it.

MacWorld says the 4s is a world phone (and AT&T, Verizon & Sprint) should work internationally.

I think one thing you may need to check if you have a 4S is to see if the sim slot is unlocked. The article touches on that briefly, and I know there has been a bit of a kerfuffle over whether or not Sprint or Verizon has locked or will lock the slot. I don't believe (and you should go out and buy a box of salt to take with this) that it is now a problem to get them to unlock the slot if you are travelling, but as I haven't done it, I may be totally wrong.

Hope this helps.

I have a 4S and DW would like an iPhone. We've decided to wait and see what pops up this summer or fall.

If you currently have an unlimited data plan with AT&T, you can keep it when you upgrade your phone. However, new users are not given that as an option. (AT&T no longer offers it, but they've "grandfathered" it for pre-existing users.) Also, if you decide to not keep the unlimited data plan when you upgrade, you cannot get it back if you change your mind later.

I am grandfathered into unlimited data. One reason I am still loyal to AT&T! :rotfl:
