To take a family trip to NYC? Our daughter is 5yo. We are thinking of a small family trip to NYC this summer. (we already live in NY) so its only a 5 hour dirve. We would stay in E. Rutherford and take a bus into the city. Kind of nervous about being in such a big city with such a young child. What do you think? I have never been before.

Yes I think it's safe. NYC gets a bad rap. I'm sure your daughter will really enjoy it!

We take my children to NYC all the time. My dd6 loves it! There is so much for a 5 year old... FAO Shcwartz, Toys R Us has the giant ferris wheel Bryant park has a carousel and free ice skating from thanksgiving to jan. I could go on and on. :thumbsup2

I have two teenage girls. we live on Long Island. I am a single mom. I've managed to bing the girls into the city for day trips many times, even when they were little. I don't undestand why you'd think NYC would be different form anyplace else yo'd take your child.

We went on Thursday for the day. It was Me, DH, My DM, and our three boys (12, 7 and 4). It is safe.

It was very very crowded, but it was Holiday Season. My youngest was a little nervous manuvering in the crowds. But they loved it. I cannot wait to go back with them. There is so much to do.

We did this two or three years ago, we flew in a three day weekend before another get together in Detroit. DW worked for an airline at the time. We had a room in Times Square (Super 8) and had a lot of fun. DD's were 5 & 10 and were great. We toured the UN, did the Statute of Liberty (it was POURING) and the Empire State building. Take them to the library, but not the main one, they have the ORIGINAL Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet on display. We all rode the subways and busses.Living in suburbia Washington State, it was quite a shock for the DD's. I would say go for it.

Hmm. I wanted to go to a conference last year in NYC. I have never been. Well I went ALONE!! I drove 4 hrs, I booked a hotal, I checked in and I wlaked to the conference that was like, 3 blocks! It was in Saho district. I got there Friday and went to the conference Sat and Sun and drove home. I did fine, not a problem. Well I did get stuck in a elevator for an hour and it was full wall to wall :scared1: but that could of happened anywhere LOL! Really it is just another city. GO and don't worry about it!

Yes it's safe! NYC is a great city and so much fun for the kids too. I would consider staying in the ity though, instead of in East Ruthorford because it's not very nice there. There are some bargains to be found in the city, check out Priceline too.

DS was 4 when we took him to NYC for his v. first trip. NYC is v. safe, loads of fun and your DD will esp. love it! As others have mentioned, FAO Schwarz, Toys R Us, skating, carousel, and the American Girls Store and, the most important Disney Store! Also, most kids love Canal Street b/c there are loads of things to look at and buy (toys, etc.). That's always DS's favorite thing to do when we go to NYC!

You don't have any luck with elevators do you? Have you noticed friends taking the stairs when you're with them;) :rotfl: ?

DH and I were in NYC last night and we were talking about when we should take our kids. Our DS is 4 1/2 and our DD is 2 1/2. I think when my DD is 4 or 5 I'm taking them to see "Beauty and the Beast." I'd take them sooner, but they're still very little. Have fun planning!

I started taking my daughter to the city when she was around 2- she loves the central park zoo, ice skating and the carousel in central park. Over the years we have gone tothe Christmas show every year, a few broadway plays, she likes to go to the museum of natural history every year, toys r us, Mars 2112 to eat or Jeckyl and Hydes to eat, circle line cruise around the city, empire state building. You could get tickets for Beauty and the Beast, great play for younger kids, my daughter saw it when she was 3 for the first time and loved it-she has see it two more times since then. She also liked Phantom of the Opera but she was 6 when seh saw that one. She also likes visiting some art museums bit her favorite by far is the museum of natural history!

My daughter was born in Manhattan, and we own an apartment on the Upper West Side that we actually live in part of the year!!! The horror!!!:scared1:

Seriously...yes, it's safe for children...

DH and I just returned from NYC and there were kids of all ages EVERYWHERE!

NYC is safe. But during the holiday season it's just too crowded to enjoy it.
I walk to Penn Station from my office at Rockeller Center, what is a 20 minute
walk is talking 35 minutes the last 2 weeks.

Can't wait till they take that tree down!:rotfl:

I've been going into NYC since I'm a kid and have been taking my kids in since they were babies (my brother has lived there at most of his life). As with any place you visit, use your common sense.

You'll love New York. If you visit, don't overlook doing simple things too. My kids had a ball just watching the dogs running around in the dog run at the Chelsea Piers. There is a really nice childrens playground up in Van Cortlant park. I always enjoy the subway ride up there, and it literally is the last stop on that line (my son got a kick out of that).

NYC is a fabulous place to visit!
I lived on Long Island until 5 years ago, I really miss taking trips into the city...
