DS was again nominated for our local boroughs 'Sports boy of the year', the criteria was those under 16 are nominated for Sports boy and those 16 and over for Sportsman of the year, DS is just 15. We went to the ceremony last night and DS did not expect to win, but came away more annoyed that the Man who won did than the fact that he did not win ~ let me explain , there were four nominations for sports boy including DS, a small talk was given about all the nominees and they introduced the last nominee as '17 year old john doe! DS was cross that this Man! had his nomination accepted even though he did not meet the criteria - well he won! We just accepted that DS did not win, and the evening carried on. We now come to the Sportsman of the Year - only two nominations a disabled swimmer that holds 4 world records and swims with DS, and you've guessed it 'john doe', well we thought the swimmer will win as you can't be a sports boy and a sports man - OH no apparantly you can cos 'John Doe' won both! our family are not upset that DS did not win, but we are upset at the way the event was run and that this Man won both - you can't be a boy and a man at the same time can you!!!! I am considering emailing the sports council and ask how the criteria can be bent in this manner but do not want it to appear as sour grapes, which it is not at all, we are actually more cross that the Disabled swimmer was passed over for an award considering his achievements than the fact that DS did not win. What do you thinks!!!

(names have been changed to protect the identity of John Doe!!!!)

The disabled swimmer sure sounds like he should have won some sort of recognition. Is there any chance that this 'man' has recently had a birthday? I certainly agree it should have been one category or the other. How did your DS get on at his training camp when he fell ill?

We've had similar things with my daughter's ice skating. What you may find is "John Doe" is acting on a technicality. For example, when he registered for the award ceremony he was 16 and the ceremony is being held when he's 17, which also means he can enter for the "man's" award because he is a "man" when the ceremony takes place.

So morally it is probably wrong, but technicaly he is probably doing nothing wrong.

Lizzy Lemon - thanks for asking, he is feeling alot better know and back in full training, it took a few weeks though for him to feel completely better, and not to feel the effects of a full training session.

I too thought oh may be he has just turned 17, but the actual criteria is 'under 16' for the sports boy and '16yrs and over' for the sportsman. Ds will just be 16 by next years awards so I would have accepted that he should be nominated in the sportsman category. but John Doe is at least 12 months too old to be sports boy if it us UNDER 16 which is what it actually says

I think that some investigation could be in order. After all, as you've said, you can't be a man and a boy at the same time ~ Trust me I've tried it! :)

it sounds very unfair to me :confused3 he surely should have been in ONLY one catagory

That doesn't sound right! If it was me I would try and get some sort of explanation for my own peace of mind, because I would be really annoyed! :furious:

Personally I would ask for clarification (i.e. a printed copy of the selectrion criteria/rules) because you are confused about which categories you can enter your son for... That doesn't seem like sour grapes.

When you get the printed criteria... if it still isn't clear how/why John Doe was nominated and won in both categories before, then ask specifically (why his nomination/win contravened the written selection policy/criteria).

Sounds fair :thumbsup2

The person that nominated my son for the award contacted the council and was told that unfortunatly an error had been made, as one group of people vote on the winner of sports boy and another group decide the winner of sports man and they never meet or discuss it, and that the nomination for sports boy had unfortunatly slipped through the net! but that they could not take back the award now and they are considering giving a second place to sports boy!!! They have promised an investigation and will be more vigillant next year.

At least you have received an explanation Claire ~ Still doesn't help your DS.

That doesn't answer the question about the ages does it? I thought that part of your query was about John Doe's age (i.e. that he was not under 16 this past year and - unless I am confused - has been nominated again for the coming year?)?
