Do you support embryonic stem cell research?

Stem Cell research poll

  • I totally support stem cell research and think it should be federally funded

  • I do not support stem cell research

  • I want research to be restricted as in the president's limitations

  • I think stem cell research should be privately funded as it is at Harvard

Results are only viewable after voting.
I had my son's umbilical cord blood saved when he was born two years ago. We will have the stem cells from that, if we ever need them, without distroying life. I think it is a great option, and wish more people knew about it.

He explained it in layman's terms for those who support the research. Cord blood shows much more promise than embryonic cells. Cord blood is already being used with great results with absolutely no moral questions involved. The greater good has not been proven with embryonic cells and it is getting private funding. I was offended by Ron when he basically said those of us who disagree need to get over it.

Also- people are being told this will be a miracle cure for every possible disease, its like snake oil.

I know 2 people suffering from Alzheimers and I support stem cell research.

As for funding, I'd prefer private funding but would not be opposed to federal funding as it does benefit hundreds of thousands of people.

For the record, I belive life begins when a fetus is viable outside of the womb.

Jenfur, your baby is adorable!

I am another who doesn't understand the opposition. It is too promising to ignore the possibilities.

another who voted option number 1, and who doesn't understand the opposition either.

our federal government needs to support scientific research more in general.

I don't understand how one can't see the opposition to this practice.

The debate is over whether it is moral to kill a just-begun human life in order to improve the lives of older humans

I think Cal Thomas said it well

"We have seen what happens to unrestrained science. While one longs to eliminate as much suffering as possible, it is never right to do wrong in order to do right. Other ways can be found, short of destroying newly begun humans, to enhance living further along life's timeline and without cutting off those who have just begun the journey".

Jenfur, Your baby is adorable! Congratulations!!

EsmeraldaX, I will not get into a big debate here, but when I was 4 months pregnant and I could feel my baby kicking around inside of me, NO ONE could tell me that he was not alive. Viable outside of me or not.

stem cell research is being done now, the ? is on where they get the stem cells and who pays for it. I do not think my tax money should be spent on this, for i know if it has all the promis they say it does, the drug companys will spend the money on this and get it going.

I voted option 1 too. My Grandfather died of Parkinsons and I would never wish that on anyone. My other Grandfather and my Grandmother both suffer from Diabetes and my ex's (who I am still good friends with) Grandfather has Alzeimers. The cells they "harvest" are from embryos created in the lab which would never become a fetus- they remove the nucleus from a donor egg and inject it w/ DNA of the person needing the cells for treatment and grow the cells in a petry dish. There is no way that a baby could ever result from this.

I'm a Republican who is for stem cell research without these seemingly religiously-based moral restrictions, as long as it is privately funded.

So we create life just to destroy it? It's either a life or it's not a life, and it doesn't hold much water to say the embryo is going to die anyway.

I support it. We also banked both our children's cord blood at birth!

These embryos couldn't, from what I've heard and read, become a viable fetus b/c there is only genetic information rom one person there are no genes from a second person which would be needed in order for there to be a baby. All they are "growing" is basically replacement cells to treat the person who the DNA sample came from.

One of the first lessons I ever learned in science was "anything with cells that divide is a living thing"... even amoebas. The only thing is... these are HUMAN cells. :(
