Do you support embryonic stem cell research?

Stem Cell research poll

  • I totally support stem cell research and think it should be federally funded

  • I do not support stem cell research

  • I want research to be restricted as in the president's limitations

  • I think stem cell research should be privately funded as it is at Harvard

Results are only viewable after voting.

Lots of talk going on about stem cell research. What it will and
won't do as well as the restrictions currently on federal funding
of it. What do you think?

I voted for the first option, but just want to clarify that I am reading that more as "it should receive federally funds available for medical research if they are available" rather than "it should be 100% federally funded", which I don't believe.

It seems that someone has already edited the poll.
Interesting. I agree that the wording was too quickly
laid out but someone edited it-weird.

I support federally funded embryonic stem cell research. My dad had MS. He died too young and spent his last years in a wheel chair. I think there are two reasons this is preferable to privately funded research.

First the results of the research won't just belong to whatever private corporation did the funding. That will allow more people to benefit from the findings and will probably reduce the costs of the ultimate products of the research.

Secondly, the federal government can apply ethical restrictions to the growth and use of the cells. Once this research continues to the private sector it is more difficult for it to be controlled.

Our economy can absorb outsourcing of jobs if the US continues to be an innovator of new technology. Stem cell research has a ways to go, but this is clearly an area of great promise. If we refuse to participate in it, scientists looking for cures to devastating diseases will find countries that will. Our reputation as an innovator is at stake.

I totally support it. My cousin, diagnosed with leukemia, had her life saved by a stem cell transplant from her sister. Imagine how much could be done with embryonic stem cells. It's a no brainer for me.

As the parent of a child with diabetes, I support stem cell research. From what I have read, this would offer my child the opportunity for a cure. I would love to be able to see him enjoy life without daily shots and finger sticks.

This is one of the few reasons that I cringe to be a republican. This and the OTC block of the morning-after pill. I really wish this particular executive branch of government would keep its morals out of my body.

I support it 100% too. Did you hear Ron Reagan Jr. last night. Very moving speech! Glad that he's on our side. :sunny:

::yes:: This is why I consider myself to be a very moderate Republican. I have NO idea why someone would be against this.

YES! No question in my mind. I can't see how anybody could be opposed to this. There are too many important possibilities!

Thinking about this, and another argument worth considering - if the US gets out in the front with this, we control it. You might not love the morals behind it, but I'd prefer that we set the standard and we regulate the morals. If not us, some country like China or India, which have decent scientific infrastructure and a lot of out-of-work bioengineering Ph.Ds from US schools (whom we've kicked out of this country post-graduation, with tightened 9/11 security controls) could corner development in this space - who knows what kind of ghoulish program could emerge - these are the countries of population control and forced abortion.

Support it 100%

I am 100% behind it! I think Ron Reagan Jr. did a fabulous job last night in explaining what stem cell research is in layman's terms and in offering great counterarguements to the points people who are opposed to it generally give.

My husband has Parkinsons Disease. Any Questions?
