DH is the the process of doing ours right now with The Rug Doctor rented from one of our grocery stores.

We've used it before along with the shampoo they sell that goes along with the machine, and have always gotten excellent results. Nobody puts as much effort into cleaning as my DH does!

And it's cheaper than hiring a service to do it!

Do you clean your own or hire out?

With 5 DCherubs, 2 cats, a St. Bernard and numerous friends.....we do our own. We actually own a Hoover Steam Cleaner which our friends and family borrow on occasion. So easy to do I do it as well as DH.

We bought a Hoover SteamVac a few years ago and use that at least once a year. I like it because it has attachments to do the furniture too. My mom is allergic to my cat so the day before she comes to watch DS we do the couches really fast and cover them with clean sheets. She still has problems but it's not as bad as before.

My MIL bought us a Hoover Steamvac a few months ago, and I just used it for the first time last weekend. I was pretty pleased with the results.

We own our own steam vac as well. With two cocker spaniels, we really had no choice.:smooth:

We have a bissel carpet cleaner (I think) it doesn't steam but it shampoos. I do my own :) I don't like other people cleaning for me (weird I know)

We have the Hoover Steam Cleaners as well. We do ours alot -- probably more than is good for the carpet but our carpet does take a beating. I've wondered if having it cleaned professionally would make it last longer -- but I just can't justify paying someone to do it when we can do it ourselves. And, it's really a pretty easy job.

I use my daughter's Hoover floor cleaner. It does not steam but you are supposed to use hot water. I use the cleaner Hoover makes for the machine and add a scoop of Oxyclean and a half cup of Foley's. Foleys is the most marvelous stuff. It takes spots out of carpet INSTANTLY. So great when you have white carpet (I didn't buy it - it was in the house when we bought it) dog, cat, kids and me spilling every 5 minutes or so. It does a great job. I do it often.

I've always had someone come in and clean them, but I've been considering The Rug Doctor. I watch what the pros do, and think, "I could do that myself". :D

I borrowed the hoover carpet cleaner from a cousin not to long ago. I thought i kept my house and furniture clean, but boy you should have seen the dirt that came out in the water.

I really want to get one of my own. My allergies seem to be really bad the past few years and i am hoping that if i can keep the rugs and furniture clean it will help.

We purchased a used professional model steam cleaner about 30 years ago. We have done our own carpets ever since. I am always amazed at how dirty the water gets!! I think it has really saved our carpets.

I'm lazy and prefer to hire it done. ;)

Will find someone else for next time though, as the last time we had them done the guy didn't shut up the entire time!
This was the second time we'd hired him, the first time he talked some but not "too bad." This time was much worse!! I opened the door and chatted with him a few minutes, then let him get on with his work. I sat at the computer thinking he would know I was working and would be quiet. Nope. Decided to go to the kitchen and wash dishes, he just talked louder so I could hear him. Went to the bedroom and shut the door, a couple minutes later he knocked on the door to say something. I couldn't get AWAY from him and his constant yakking!! I was SO GLAD when he was done and FINALLY left! Will NOT hire him again!!!

We've heard great things about the Hoover, we'll have to look into getting one.

I will say though that DH did an excellent job...and the fact that he'll go over a heavy traffic area 3 or 4 times, where a professional just gives it the once over and moves on.

The dirty water we dumped out was enough to gag me! I can't believe that much dirt can get trapped into carpets! YUCK!

For those who don't own their own steam cleaners, I recommend the Rug Doctor and their shampoos. They look brand new again!

I rented The Rug Doctor last week and spent half a day doing my carpets. The results were wonderful- and my 'waste water" was yucky beyond belief.

Hoover SteamVac owner here. We had two dogs and someone always causing a spill so it was a necessity. I haven't had to use it as often as when the 5 yr old lab was a pup, but I use it probably twice a year for thorough cleaning in the living room, more often for spot cleaning throughout the house.

I am usually appalled by the dark water that pulls up from the carpet. It's even worse when combined with pet hair and pet urine. Thank goodness, I think he's finally grown out of that stage!

Another satisfied Hoover SteamVac owner here. Glad I bought it about 2 or 3 years ago as I can do those spots and spills (even on upholstered furniture) right away. I think it's a worthwhile investment and I think it's pretty much paid for itself now.

And as a side note - the box that it comes in makes into an excellent screen to hide the kitty box beside the water heater in the laundry area (kitty likes privacy) :teeth:. I think I'm going to cover it in a pink (kitty is a girl) mac-tac one day to improve the decor in there though! :teeth:
