I'm always curious as to what other languages people speak. I'm fluent in Portuguese. I used to be fluent in Spanish and French back when I was in high school (from taking AP French and Spanish), but haven't spoken either in years.

I'm learning French and my daughter is learning Spanish through Mind Snacks! (iphone app).

French, very badly though. lol.
My In laws (and relatives) are portuguese and most spoke fluent french. I learned to make sure they weren't plotting my demise for not wanting to live in Europe. lol. although they very well could have been doing it in Portuguese.

I sound horrible though. no one would mistake me for native

日本語! Japanese. It's exceptionally useful in central FL. I took four years of French in HS but only remember the bad words!

Spanish, but Im not sure that's even considered a foreign language anymore LOL!

Im fluent in Croatian.

I took 3 years of french in highschool and I only remember the simple words to get me by...like, what time is it, where's the bathroom. Lol.

I wouldn't say I'm fluent in Spanish, but I'm very competent (enough to take all of my classes in Spanish when I studied in Spain in college). It's gotten a little rusty but comes right back when I spend a couple of days in a Spanish speaking country.

My French isn't nearly as good - I can read and write it passably, but my spoken accent is terrible. I can get by with basics (directions, dining, shopping, etc.) though. I would love to take a year's sabbatical, move to France, and work on it. Some day...

I've done Pimsleur tapes for other languages before traveling (Swahili, Japanese) which were helpful to learn a few phrases, but I wouldn't say I really learned the language, grammatical structure, etc.

I really wish that in the US we started teaching foreign languages in public schools from kindergarden on up. The earliest that I could start taking Spanish at school was 7th grade, as an elective. I have a Swedish friend who is totally fluent, perfect accent in English and German along with Swedish, because foreign languages were part of her school curriculum there from the very beginning.

I speak a little Spanish, but when I do it sounds like a foreign language. :rolleyes1

I speak Lao (my first language as a kid) and english.

I took french but only remember dirty words and telling someone off in it. :P

I'm not fluent in Spanish but if you dropped me off in the middle of a South American jungle, I can get myself home to NY. I am Puerto Rican and did not learn Spanish growing up. My Puerto Rican grandparents actually spoke English and they spoke it to me (thinking it would give me an edge in America). Little did they know that it worked against me!!

My daughter is going to know Spanish.

I'm fluent in Spanish (my parents spoke English at home, so had to learn it in school. A year in Spain helped tons), and know a smattering of German - enough to get me into trouble.

I find that French and Spanish are closely related and German and English are closely related. If you know one, you can pick up the other.

German and Spanish. I did Spanish in elementary, middle & high, then switched to German at University and spent some time in Germany.

Fairly fluent French. I studied Latin and Ancient Greek at university, so I can read a bit of both but can't speak either!

Latvian!:cool1:

First generation, grew up in a 3 generational home and it was a blessing. Best way to describe my childhood is to compare it to Big fat greek wedding movie. Went to latvian school on Saturdays, girlscouts, church, summercamp, dance... All in Latvian!

I speak both Southern and Redneck, and have a working knowledge of English...I can speak it but don't ask me to spell it.

fluent in ASL, German and French. Speak some Spanish, Russian and Japanese. And of course fluent in English

I am fluent in Latin and functionally fluent in German. Not the two most useful languages for daily life, but c'est la vie...

I know some Estonian.... spent 3 yrs taking Spanish in HS and can say the basics that most people know without 3yrs of classes LOL languages arent my thing at all!

My husband speaks Arabic and Spanish. He currently teaches Arabic.
