Do you sleep on a futon?

I'm thinking of getting futons for my two teenaged DDs who share a very small room, and keeping them in a "couch" position. They both prefer to sleep on our regular living room couches anyway...they like having a "back" to sleep against. But are futons mattresses comfortable? We have an OLD futon couch on our porch, with a cheapy mattress which is squished down and NOT comfy. What would I need to know about buying good quality mattresses?

Yeah, right, Dan! Even the Heavenly Dog Bed costs more than mine! :teeth:

My daughter has an inexpensive futon in her spare bedroom and we sleep on it when we visit. It really was surprisingly comfortable. It's just the mattress that came with the frame but I'm guessing that if that one is comfy, most would be, lol.

When I am at my boyfriend's house we sleep on his futon since it is bigger and it is incredibly uncomfortable. We both wake up sore every morning but we have no choice his bed is too small.

Yep......depends on the futon mattress.
DD had a VERY expensive nice one in her dorm room. The mattress was very thick. It was quite comfortable.
However....when she moved into an apartment, we got a cheap one since she only needed it for a year....and that is about it on that. Lumpy and umcomfortable. We put a thick foam pad on it too.
DS also had a cheap one as a sofa in his apartment. Used only as a couch and it was in the dump after his 3 years there.

I had slept on one once, and didn't like it. It was uncomfortable, and I had a sore back when I woke up.
When you find for one, have your daughters test it out in the store so they know how it will feel and they will be able to tell you if they like it or not.
Futon beds are very convinent cause you can make it into a sofa when they are not in use.

Just bought one today for my teen DS bedroom. Got him a full bunk with a futon under it. I didn't like the mattress that came with it so we went to mattress expo. They had several levels of mattress with the cheapest being $69, next was $100, then $150 then $200. Both the $150 and $200 were extremely comfortable with inner springs. The cheap ones felt like sitting on a pillow.

We have 2 futons. One is on the floor no supports. It is under my twins loft bunk beds. They still wanted to sleep together so we bought the futon and made a fort under for them. The mattress was about 210.00 and it is very comfortable. I lie down with them and honestly it is more comfortable than my $2200 pillow top I just bought myself. DD 17 has the same mattress both were purchased at Mattress world.

My son has a cheap one in his room and he does fine with it. I sleep on it every now and then it is comfortable. It is the metal frame with the mattress that cost 99.00 at Walmart. I put padding underneath it and that make it very comfortable. I could see how you couldn't use them for many years though because his mattress wears out fast. He is on his 2nd in 2 years.
He is about to graduate to bunk beds though. I have always been so scared of them, but I think he is old enough now.

I don't ever want to sleep on one again. In fact, we gave it away to the salvation army. It was around 200.00, mayne that had something to do with it. <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_28_113.gif' border=0></a>

My high schooler sleeps on a futon and loves it. He always has it in couch position.
