DH & I have accounts but never really used them. Now with him gone so much over the next few months, we'll be giving it a good try. Otherwise, we sit here emailing back & forth. lol

Do people still use Skype or has it run its course?

Love it- so much better to see the person you are talking to-esp when they are far away!

My cousin's DD had her baby on a navy base in Japan and they Skyped right after to see the baby-and he posted a pic the 'daddy" took of them all Skyping together-cute

I've been skyping this year and wish I had discovered it much earlier. It's great when one of us is traveling and also to keep in touch with some out of town friends. :goodvibes

I couldn't do it before, but I bought a laptop last year & it has a webcam. DH's laptop already had one.

Unfortunately, none of our parents or relatives have webcams that I'm aware of.

Yep. DD is at college in Sarasota, we are outside Chicago. We get to see her summer, Christmas and Skype everything else. I would be neurotic without it.

I started using Skype this year to keep in touch with my boyfriend after I moved away to school. My friends and I also use the group chat to keep up with each other.

LOVE IT!! We used webcam when DS was delpoyed to Iraq. It's also great for out of state grandbabies/family. :lovestruc

Now that DS is deployed to Afghanistan, he Skypes us whenever he gets the opportunity. So for us it's a welcomed Godsend. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I use Skype to talk to my parents who live 4 hours away and use it to talk to my husband when he's working out of town.

This past summer I lived apart from DH to go back to school for a semester and would've been an even bigger mess if it weren't for that fact that I got to see him everyday via Skype!!

It's great for long distance relationships. :)

I'm going to be in this situation for the first time. Can you give me some tips? Do you know in advance when he's going to "call"? How good is the connection over there? I heard its pretty slow. Is he doing it from an internet cafe on base or is he paying for his own connection? I heard some guys in Iraq could pay $60 a month for connection but it was pretty slow. I don't know what is offered in Afghanistan yet. Just based on DH's job, I'm pretty sure he'll be somewhere that will have this if its offered.

I sent an email out to all friends & relatives to ask who else has a webcam because I don't think they do.

We use it all the time to talk with my dss who is studying in Italy. Love it.

My husband's currently in Afghanistan, and is barely able to call, nevermind Skype. All of my friend's husbands are over there as well and out of about 15 of us, only the PAO is able to Skype once in a while because of his job. I'd go into it expecting the least and just be happy what whatever you end up with. I've been getting a phone call about every 2 weeks.

As to the original question, I registered for Skype for my husband's first deployment, but it ended up that he didn't have access there either...so I've never actually gotten to use it.

We love Skype! We've been using it for over a year (maybe 2). My parents live in NJ, we're in MN, so this way they get to see DD about 5 times a week. Every once in a while we Skype my aunt in NJ, my cousins in NY, or my cousin in Argentina. It has really helped us stay in touch. And you can't beat free. :thumbsup2

DH & I use Skype during the day to stay in touch, but only for texts. We don't use the camera feature.

dbf and i skype 24 hours a day. I cant sleep if the puter isnt runnin with skype going. beside the bed.

He lives in the Us for now. Counting the weeks till he is here for good. Skype has been awesome for us for the last year.

My college dd uses it daily. I don't have a webcam yet, otherwise I would probably use it to talk to her.

I bought the webcam for around $60

As someone said its FREE!!! We text the person we want to Skpe to see if they are free and at home to video chat.:)

I use it nearly every weeknight to talk to DH as he travels out of the country for work most weeks. I also use it once or twice a month to talk with my parents (they live in Mexico). I love SKype.

I use it to see my best friend in Japan! My sister and brother-in-law are moving soon so using Skype will be helpful too.

DH and I have used it when I have to go out of town for work over night. We mainly use it for DS...he likes to act silly for the camera because he can see himself while doing it. Not so sure how much he cares about seeing me! LOL!

DH and two of his friends used it (just chat, not video) while watching one of the Saints' playoff games. One friend was in Houston and the other was in the Navy and was overseas in Bahrain. Funny thing was that the Houston guy had a delay that the Bahrain guy did not have. Strange.
