Do you salt/pepper your food before eating or tasting it?

I've always tasted my food before I decided that it needed salt/pepper. I'm not much of a salter anyways but I cringe when I see people put salt/pepper on their food before they even start eating it. Yesterday I saw a guy dump a bunch of salt on his meal before he had one bite :p Maybe he had it before and he knows it needs salt.. but Yuck!

What do you do?

I hardly ever salt after cooking, and never pepper. But if I do salt, it's always because I tasted first and decided it needed it.

for eggs/potatoes/japanese rice (don't ask), I salt before tasting.
that's really all I put salt on...besides popcorn.

and...funny...i don't even like pepper...I don't mind it in mashed potatoes or dishes that other people make...but I'll never add pepper to anything i'm eating.

never, we dont even have a salt or pepper shaker in the house. We use crushed pepper for cooking, and have a big can of salt for that, or salting the steps if we run out of snowmelt.

I never pre-salt or pepper anything. The only thing I even add salt to for cooking is potatoes. How can you know if something needs salt/pepper before you taste it? My BF does that and it drives me crazy.

I don't since I think the salt and pepper I use to cook with is enough, but DH is the seasoning king. He puts so much salt on his food that I have to ask if he would just like me to make him a salt block since he can't possibly taste the food!

I taste it first. My husband on the other hand salts first than eats, glad I don't cook with salt.

I taste my food first. If it needs seasoning, I'll add salt/pepper. I'm more prone to add pepper than salt.

I hate it when people dump salt all over their food without tasting. I don't put a salt shaker out on my table either and I know it drives my in-laws nuts. They salt everything without tasting. Even foods in restaurants that are notoriously salty to begin with like Caesar salads and Mexican food.

I don't mind people putting some freshly ground pepper on food but the salt dumping thing really gets to me for some reason. Maybe its because I don't like salty foods except for the occasional pretzel.

I can't stand pepper, so I never use it. With salt, I always taste the food before adding salt to see if it needs it

I usually taste then salt/pepper. Somethings that I make a lot I just automatically salt/pepper when I sit down to eat. I don't cook with it because I don't like DD having all of the salt/pepper. :D

It all depends on what I am eating or where I am. I know that I need to add salt (and pepper sometimes) to whatever I am eating at my in-laws. But, they all also do the same so no big deal. If I am eating at someone's house, I refrain from adding anything unless I really, really need it in order to eat teh food. I feel that it is insulting to the cook to add salt and pepper no matter if you do it before or after the first bite. That being said, there are certain things that just need some salt or /and pepper, like corn on the cob.

Must be a military thing because even though DH isn't in the navy anymore, the man will keep sprinkling that salt on until we all tell him to stop!

Me, on the other hand, I'm like Cruella DeVil. Gotta have my pepper and lots of it!

I salt and pepper almost everything when I'm cooking it but I hardly ever put it on anything after I've finished cooking. Once in a while I might add some pepper to something but not very often. I'm not a big fan of salt so I don't use it much at all. My MIL salts everything-even potato chips. I don't know how she can taste anything BUT salt. Yuck!

Oh gosh, I salt and pepper everything when I'm cooking. Then we I eat, I sometimes add even more. Guess I'm a saltaholic!!! I get that from my daddy! :lovestruc:
