Do you really call him "Big Daddy"?

I like it better than Mee-Maw and Pop-Pop or Pa-Pa.

My grandparents were called "Big Daddy" and "Big Mama" and I never thought to call them anything else. They were very happy with the names.

Why would Big John or Big Mom-mom be creepy? What am I missing:confused3

Thanks for all the responses. I don't think it is creepy. I just have co-workers who when I told them about this, they thought I was kidding and playing into a "stereotype". With all the great responses I've told them about, they can no longer think I'm crazy

I don't call anyone in my family by it, but I have heard it before. I'm not getting what is so creepy about "Big Daddy" either :confused3. To a child, that is often the easiest explanation. It's better than "Old Daddy".

It's just a name for little ones to call the older folks, like Mee-Maw, Paw-Paw, Mimi, Papa, Pa, Pop, etc. But like those names, it just kind of becomes the name that everyone calls them, at least when talking to the children. It just catches on like any nickname.

Another common thing in the south, at least in some protestant denominations, is to call the church service "Big Church". To children, that distinguishes it from children's church (a service during church time that is more geared at children). It's the same general idea.

Dear lord - I am Texan born and bred and NEVER encountered what you describe! So, no, I would say it is NOT common! In fact it would really creep me out if I did hear it! :scared:

Dh's parents WANTED my kids to call them Mammy and Pappy... :confused3 I kept tell him we aren't from the south.. I've never heard anyone around here call their grandparents Mammy and Pappy.

My kids call my mom - Grammy.

They call my grandmother - Big Grandma. This started when my oldest was one an could not say great grandma. Big Grandma has stuck, but they are her only great grandchildren who call her that.

This summer my kids decided it would be funny to call their dad "Big Bald Daddy." :scared1: That did not fly. It did make me laugh whenever they said it! :rotfl: Leave it to a 4 & 8 year old to make up a name!

My husband's grandparents for several generations were Big Momma and Big Daddy. He even had a great aunt whose grandchildren called her Fat Granny. In contrast to Fat Granny, Big Momma and Big Daddy didn't seem so bad! We didn't encourage this in our family however and thank goodness they decided on Nana and Papa.

Born and raised Texan, living in FORT Worth right now, and have never heard that term before. I don't think it's a southern or Texan thing to do. We've always just called them Great Grandparents or another cutesy name (mine was Mamaw).

Don't think it's creepy, though!

My DH was born and raised in Texas, and he called his great gma "Big Granny" and his gma "Granny".

My mother was raised in the south and she raised us to say big church also.
