Santa is bringing me an Ipod Touch 4g, and I'm clueless. I'd like to be able to read (or listen to) books on it. My library has some kind of setup where you can "borrow" ebooks and audiobooks. Does anyone do this, and is it worthwhile? I'm not sure how to begin and if I will kill my eyes with the little screen.

I have tried it and do not enjoy it at all. The screen is so small that I feel like I'm barely reading a sentence per "page". The test isn't too small to read, just that the small screen makes reading a lot of text awkward. (I was able to download library books)

I used the free Kindle application to download ebooks from amazon.com on my iPod touch before i got an iPad. It did take some getting used to, and I did switch the font to black screen-white font and that helped, but all in all it was ok. Not as good as a larger screen of course.

The kindle app is free and many kindle books are free, too, so it wouldn't hurt to download the kindle app and a free book to see if you like it before investing in a pricier book.

I tried with the kindle app on my iPhone but it was too hard on my eyes so I just got a kindle.

Good suggestion. I wouldn't plan on reading on it very long - screen is just too small to be comfortable. I've read on it in a pinch - DR's office, etc when I didn't have my Kindle. Many free books for Kindle that you could try.

I LOVE to read books on my ipod touch!!! I don't ever want to buy real books now. It's SO easy to lay in bed and read and all I have to hold is this little thin ipod!
I use an app called Stanza. It lets me change the font size by doing the "pinch and swipe" ipod thing. I'm pretty sure it was a free app and it has TONS of free books (like classics/public domain books) that you can download.
I also use a website at www.DrinkMalk.com and the guy there has tons of newer/popular books that you can download for free. (like I got all the Harry Potter ones and the Last Olympian etc) He has directions on the website for how to set it up in Stanza and download the books directly to your ipod.

Way to small to read comfortably- if you want to download and read books get a nook or a kindle= the itouch will kill your eyes trying to read on!

My husband reads on his iPhone constantly, I always have a book going on mine so that I have something to read in lines or when waiting somewhere. It takes some getting used to.

Its not my favorite way to read because I much prefer the eInk screens.

But it is a great way to check out eBooks and learn how the system works and it is also a great way to get a couple of pages of reading in when you're stuck waiting somewhere with nothing to do.

I read on my Droid X all the time. I get about 7 lines of text on each screen so not huge but not bad either. I am getting a Nook color for Christmas. Ebooks from the library only work with the Nook app (or maybe even with just a Nook-not sure). Kindle doesn't support library books. I have both the Kindle and Nook apps on my phone. It is especially nice for when you are waiting at the dr's office, dentist office, etc. I always have my phone with me so I always have a book with me now.

no - Overdrive Library Checkouts work with several different brands of eReaders including Sony, Kobo, Pocketbooks, Aluretek .... and many, many others. Basically any reader that can display a Adobe Digital Editions ePub file.

They also now work as an App on Apple iThing products. I'm not sure about an Android App but if they don't have one out yet I'm sure they will soon.

Those ereaders are all Barnes/Nobel Nook compatible. Amazon Kindle does not work with library books.

No the Kindle isn't compatible, that is why I didn't list it.
No, those eReaders are not all Barnes and Noble compatible, but they can read standard ADE ePub so they can read Overdrive Library books.

Barnes and Noble has their own DRM scheme which is not the same as standard Adobe Digital Editions. Barnes and Noble can however also display standard ADE DRM'd books which is why the nook can read library Overdrive books.

Adobe has said they will incorporate Barnes and Noble DRM in future versions, but as of yet they haven't.

As of right now, nook products can read standard Adobe DRM like with Overdrive - but other Adobe DRM compatible machines cannot read eBooks from Barnes and Noble.

The only book I read on my ipod is my bible because its handy to carry with me to look up verses when I am in a bible study or at church. I have tried to read actual books but its just too small for me to use comfortably.

Audio Books is another whole ballgame! My car has the sync function so I always have an audio book hooked up and playing from my ipod. My library uses overdrive so I can download something all the time. You can also put up to 10 books on hold so you always have something new coming up!

I read books all the time on the Ipod touch using the Kindle app and I know there are other reader apps as well. I like the fact that I can have a reader small enough to slip into my pocket when I have a few minutes to kill.

I don't read books with my Ipod Touch (don't own any other e-reader either...I like the paper/cardboard in my hands!) but I LOVE listening to books on it. Library's audiobook collection is pretty well stocked and its easy to "check one out". Great way to pass a long road trip in the car.:thumbsup2

I use my iTouch as a ereader all the time. I really like it. I've used a number of teh apps and I think I like Stanza the best.
