Australian here - love vegemite 💗. We are raised on the stuff - just like Americans love peanut butter. The big problem with most people trying it is twofold - you have to use butter / margarine under it (it tempers the flavour) and second, unless you’ve eaten it before and know what to expect you only need a thin layer! I’ve seen Americans slather the stuff on toast / bread then almost puke - don’t do this!

It is vegan however was not invented as that purposefully - just happens to be that way. Great source of vitamins which is why it has always been marketed to Mum’s as being excellent for kids. Most Australians start eating it as a first solid food on toast / crackers / rusks / sandwiches. We have 3 kids - the 17yo has only recently started to eat it after hating it between the ages of 4-16, the 15yo ate it every single school day for 2yrs before deciding he would only eat it on toasted sourdough topped with avocado (he doesn’t eat butter so avo does that job) and our 12yo prefers peanut butter.

I tried Marmite when I was young however didn’t like it. From memory it was not as powerful as vegemite, milder.

You know, I’ve seen a lot of hurtful stereotypes about Americans in my lifetime, but this might be the most hurtful one yet. Don’t you dare accuse me of loving that vile slop! 🤮

;)

@TipsyTraveler I’m sorry to lump you in with the large majority of peanut butter loving Americans 😂 but you have to admit nowhere else in the world seems to be as obsessed with the stuff!

The Netherlands is, actually. They also enjoy chocolate sprinkles on toast for breakfast.

Another American here who is not a fan of peanut butter; not even as a kid. LOL

I remember when I was 18 and the song from Men at Work hit the charts here in America, I can still remember the lyrics today at 58.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
Six foot four, full of muscle
I said, "Hey, do you speak-a my language, buck?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich

When I was around 30 or so my wife and I had the chance to travel on vacation to Australia. Because of this song, one of the items on my bucket list was trying Vegemite. We absolutely loved the country and the people. To this day it's one of the best vacations we have ever taken. But I cannot say the same about Vegemite. :crazy2:

Like Tom Hanks? He had some good-hearted backlash for posting a photo of his overly-vegemited bread.

PS- not A fan of peanut butter, BTW.
