Do you like outdated decor?

Not really. I feel the same as you. - Why would I change it if I like it?

AMEN!!!!!!
I couldn’t agree more!!!!!

My kitchen window valence is 20 years old.
I love it and it was never trendy, so IMO it’s not outdated.

My front room curtains and furniture is 17 years old. Again, not trendy, so I don’t believe it goes out of style. I am going to sadly need to replace the furniture soon because the couch & love seat are whiteish/ivory and are looking a little dingy (even though I vacuum them) and the red chair has faded due to sunlight hitting it. This is my favorite room of the house, so changing it makes me sad.

I painted my room brown recently so I could just switch out my curtains and bedding whenever I wanted to, but I don't follow trends. My aunt is in the middle of "updating" our extremely 80s decor, and thinks that if she paints everything gray it'll be trendy. I feel like I'm living in the lower decks of a battleship.

My house was painted all gray by the sellers before they put it on the market. It was nice to have a blank slate, but the more color we put (dining room is now blue, living room is a yellowy green) in the more I hate the remaining gray. It's so drab, especially when it's next to color.

Pretty much everything in my house is various shades of brown/beige and then I chose a color for the accessories in each room. The bedroom has blue comforter, the living room has a red chair/red pillows on the couch, the bathroom has a coral shower curtain, etc - but they all match the basic brown walls.

If you're not planning on moving and it's something you like keep them. Removing valences and repainting is an easy fix when it's time to sell.
Perfect answer. I wouldn't change anything just based on trends. My DMom always used to say "If everybody else was jumping out the window, would you jump too?!?"

That said, I like to freshen things up from time-to-time. Our decor is going on 7 years old and it's time to re-paint the feature wall from red (angry 90's red - ha!) to blue or green. The main wall colour and flooring throughout is all neutral browny-taupe so once the feature wall is done I'll get new living room furniture (currently also red and 11 years old), new draperies and switch a few pieces of wall art. Voile! It will look like an entirely new place. :goodvibes
Nobody better ridicule my awesome 70s decor!!! I won’t stand for it!!

Calm down hippy - it's groovy.

I am not a person who really decorates. I am a person who wants functional items and I use them until they no longer work. The guest room has the furniture my parents bought for me when I got out of my crib (Take my word for it, that was a long time ago). It’s good, solid maple wood in a simple style so why get rid of it? Upholstered furniture is in simple styles and neutral colors. I add color with throw pillows if I want to.

I know some people like to have their homes looking like an up to date showplace, but that’s just not me.

My favorite architectural style is mid-century modern and indoors I love anything that fits into that time frame.

This is where my cheap side comes out. Why redecorate often when that money is much better put to use in other ways imo? We are both DIY types so we've done our own unique things so they won't go out of style as they were never in style.

I wouldn't say I like my decor being outdated, I'm just not all that interested in changing it every time a new trend comes along.
I did just change out some curtains and valances that I love, but they were definitely looking dated and they were in prominent parts of my house.
I did keep them though so when they come back in style I can use them again :thumbsup2

I decorate with what I like. If something is expensive or difficult to replace (kitchen cabinets, flooring, couches, my bedroom furniture) I go with a classic style rather than whatever is trendy. If it's something easy and cheap (like paint, linens, curtains) I go with what I like and can change it up if/when I get tired of it.

Our stuff is pretty neutral so I wouldn't say outdated. I would love to update stuff and have a different look. I look at other homes, they look cluttered, but also that clutter looks awesome. I don't have any of that. I guess main reason is I hate shopping in a store so much that I never have the chance to get a ton of decorations. And, I don't want to hassle with finding stuff online. I tried wayfair once to look at decorating ideas and stopped as way too overwhelmed with the hundreds of pages of stuff.

I know we've talked about this before, but I guess I'm really in the "I like my old stuff, darn it!" mood. So, curious where other people stand.

I'm not a person who changes decor frequently. When I find what I like (often already outdated by the time I get around to inputting it) I tend to stick with it. I have no problem with furniture from different eras and think it adds personality. I did update some country oak by painting and staining during the pandemic, but even that trend is now outdated. We updated both bathrooms. I still have oak kitchen cabinets, but updated around them with new hardware, fixtures, etc. I even find myself resisting moving knick knacks - I like them where I put them initially so sometimes things stay the same for a long time! (Even things like Christmas decor evolve VERY slowly since I enjoy bringing out the same things each year, but I do see a big difference if I compare to 20 years ago.)

I've been debating window treatments and going back and forth on whether it's worth it to remove some valances. I actually still like the valances where they are, but admittedly wouldn't put them up if I were decorating right now.

Pros to keep... I actually still like them, I made most of them myself - specifically so they wouldn't be too fussy, I have fond memories of them, they add color, and mostly - I don't want to have to repaint when I take down the rods!

Pros to remove.... updated look, getting out of my rut, not turning into my mother.

I don't want to be my mother, because her house we're about to put on the market in really sad shape because she flat out neglected updates (for example, they had to put in a new shower for repair about 20 years ago, but left the cabinets and formica from the 60's because they were perfectly functional - it is NOT a cute eclectic look, it's bad) , but I also don't see the need to update just because things have been there a while if I actually still like them.

ARRRGH. The struggle is real. I've probably been thinking about these window treatments for a year. We're systematically going through the house and doing updates and repairs since we're nearing retirement and we've made it through everything else. The stuff I'm seeing on the market doesn't really look different than what I have now to me when I look at pictures.

Any thoughts or wisdom to share?
Being trendy is a waste of time and money. My sister is trendy. She just redid her already-lovely house, and it looks worse than it did before. Before, the front parlor and living room were great, and now they're kind of meh. And she paid a lot of money to downgrade to meh.

Those formica cabinets from the 60's were once trendy. And that's the problem with following trends- they go out of style. There is plenty of classic furniture made in the 60's that still looks great & would be in demand today if you could find it. The key is to have the taste to choose what is really good, regardless of it's trendy or not.

I am terrible at decorating. I mean I have 0 style and I have no patience to update stuff at all. My kitchen and main bathroom were redone in 1984 by my parents. The cabinets at real cherry wood and too dark for my taste but they are so well made that I would hate to replace them with junk that I would just have to change again in 10 years. My bathroom is an issue since the undermount sink is cracked and needs to be replaced but the replacing it could mean cracking the corian and ruining the cabinets.

FWIW - this can be done successfully quite easily by professionals. To be on the safe side you need to hire a granite counter-top company to remove and replace the top, not just let the plumber do it.
