Do you let your kids out to play if they stay home from school sick?

The reason I ask is that my 13 y.o. has a friend that is allowed out after school to play, even though he stayed home "sick."

I asked his friend how he was, and he said he had a sore throat, but yet here he is swimming in their friend's pool.

I asked him yesterday if he'd be going to school today and he told me yes.

He wasn't at the bus stop with the other kids this morning. Maybe his mother drove him in (highly doubtful as he always rides the bus.) Today makes the third day in a row that he didn't go to school, yet later on, I'll see him riding his bike or going to the friend's pool to swim.

We have a rule in our house, if you're too sick to go to school, you're too sick to go out and play.

What is your opinion?

Same rule here!!::yes::

I don't see a reason to make him stay inside (the fresh air could do him some good). But, I don't think he should be playing with other kids or swimming.

Same rule at my house. If you're too sick for school you're too sick to play. I will let them sit outside, but not play. Sometimes the fresh air and sunlight makes them feel a little better.

Growing up, we went to school sick or not

Absolutely no way. DD has learned from preschool that if she stays home from school, she stays in all day and night. No exceptions.;)

Same rule here just the other day ds was having a friend over after school he was sent home sick by nurse for stomach pain and still wanted friend over because he was feeling better I told him no what if you have something running its course and you make your friend sick .

When I was growing up, if we stayed home sick, we stayed in bed. No tv, NOTHING.

Our school now has a policy that you have to be fever free for 24 hours. Well, a lot of times DD will be sick one day and have a fever all day long, and she'll wake up the next morning, and she's fine. Can't send her to school, though, becasue of that rule. I do no make her not play. However, she can not go and play with the other kids. She has to stay at home. I wouldn't let her go to the park and run around. But, I sure don't make her stay in bed at home all day. If we have errands to run, I will take her with me.

When I was growing up it was you go to school unless you are dying. I don't want my kids to be that way.

Whenever DD is too sick to go to school she usually ends up having something that could be contagious so I certainly don't let her out to play with other children. If she's feeling up to it we might sit outside or go for a short walk but that's about it. When she's sick she's really sick and usually just wants to lay on the couch.

Growing up we weren't allowed to go play when we were sick. Again we only stayed home when we were truely sick not just a scratchy throat or sniffles.

Same here.

No school. No play.

They have to stay in bed during school hours. They can read books, but no TV/Gameboy/Computer/etc. And definately not allowed to play outside if they were home from school!!!

Oh dont get me going. ;) We have the same rule here. No school, no going outside or out anywhere. However we have friends who have no trouble not sending their kids to school then having him play around the neighborhood all afternoon...with my kids. And like your situation, theyve been known to be out one afternoon, then stay home again the next day. Of course my DS then thinks thats ok and expects to be able to do it too.

I do allow my kids to go outside & play a little, not with other kids, just each other. They are not allowed to run around, get out of breath & all sweaty, but can swing, play bubbles, ride their scooter in the driveway or just play around in the yard. My pediatrician, said that the fresh air is good for them & that there are fewer germs outside. I would not allow them to play with other kids much less go swimming.

I certainly wouldn't let a sick child swim in a friends pool..whether he had been to school that day or not.

If one of my kids stayed home for a low grade fever, cold, cough etc, I wouldn't automatically say they had to stay inside for the day.....keeping in mind that schools have certain rules about HAVING to keep your kids home (no temp over 99, no rashes, 24 hrs after fever or vomitting)....so it's not always that the kid made a choice to stay home. The fresh air might do them some good and I MIGHT let them play quietly in our own back yard. I would NOT let them leave the yard or play with other children.

Of course, I've yet to have any of my children fake illness to stay home from school. If that became a problem, I would have to enforce a "no play" rule.

DS was home sick yesterday, he stayed in the house aside from running out to my van to get his backpack. He had to read, work on a school project and rest! He's allowed to watch tv while he's home mostly to save my sanity, I don't really want to listen to him whine!

My parents used to make me pick a religion out of this HUGE book they had, read about it and write a book report. They were mean!

Wow--writing a report? That IS mean!

DD has developed a tendency to tell me that she doesn't feel well when she's really just sleepy so I've become a lot tougher on staying home. We've always had the no school, no play rule though. She can watch TV or read and has to stay in her bed.

She has allergies so it can make her really sleepy in the morning--I can sympathize because I have the same problem (for the last few weeks, I'd sleep round the clock if I could!) but she needs to learn that life doesn't stop because she has allergies.

A few months ago DH and I saw our ex-DIL and our DGD at Ponderosa at lunch time. We asked if they would like to share our table (we still very much like our ex-DIL but rarely get to see her anymore) so they did. We asked our DGD why she wasn't in school and her mother said "oh, she had a headache this morning." Well, I'm sorry but if she had a headache in the morning and didn't go to school, she shouldn't be having lunch in a restaurant then, she should be at home. I never would have done that with my kids, if they were too sick to go to school they were too sick to go outside, play, or go to town.
