They are always saying " We can't afford this" We can't afford that" " I wish we had that kind of money" etc.etc. etc. But their eating out at least 2 meals a day every day that comes, I mean the whole family is eating out. They have every cable channel on the planet. They are always sporting new outfits. If their car gets a little skip in the motor they trade it in and get a new one. But these same people if you try and get a couple of families together for an outing they won't go because they say they don't have the money, but if some one offers to take care of the bill for them their the first ones wanting to go. Then the next day you see them piling out of the car the pizza place for supper, but just the night before they had no money.

Am I the only one that can not stand this.

I want to grab them and say "You big dummies you blow more money than anybody else I know and then want US to believe you can't even go bowling, because you are so POOR!!"

I think these people need to grow up.

How does everyone else handle these kinds of people?

Yes! I know people who say they are living off of their 2nd mortgage, but keep 2 very nice new SUVs, have redecorated every room in their house in major ways, all wear nice clothes, go out a lot and are talking about taking a family spring break trip to Cancun (and this is after a ski trip after Christmas.) I'm really not jealous---I am very happy they can do these things--but I'm very curious (OK--nosey!) I just don't know how they do it. How do you live off a 2nd mortgage and do all these things? Am I missing something? Is there a big secret I don't know? Are they just really in debt up to their eye balls and just keep going?

Yes, I do and it drives me nuts!!!!! because it comes from a family member and not going out and doing simple things like going out, but bigger things! Don't get me started, my blood is starting to boil as I type...

I always say most of us are fortunate to have a certain disposable income; how we choose to spend it is another matter. Apparently 'saving money' when you want to purchase something is an outdated idea.

When people make those comments in general, I usually ignore them. But when they make them at me, I usually say, "well we all have to pick and choose how we spend our money". They get the point. And, heck, I'm the one who is saying I can't afford this or that on what they spend their money on (eating out every day of the week).

I agree totally. We choose to save our extra cash for vacations. I'm very thrifty when it comes to clothes, cars, etc. It's a matter of choice.

In my family...totally nauseating. They "don't have the money", but they don't miss out on anything in life, including posh schools for the kids...blech. I want to scream YES! You do have the money...you use everyone else's!

I have friends like this. Usually I think I should not be so bothered by the way other people spend their money, but it's hard not to be when those other people are constantly griping about lack of funds as they sit in my living room with one of 3 Coach diaper bags by their sides as their two small (under 4) boys run around in their Ugg boots and latest Gap clothes, talking about the $5k awning they are buying for their condo's patio

I'll just put this one out there, you are a smart bunch:

Family X has a child in a wheelchair, they built a house on a plot of land (from scratch). I suggested they switch the toilet in her bathroom to a shorter (nonstandard) one so she could learn to go to the bathroom by herself, the reply was "it's an extra $250 and will have to be changed in a few years when she gets bigger anyway"

They eat out frequently (fast food) and have a bigger dvd collection than anyone I know. Always saying things are too expensive. The kids mimic the parents now of course.

Priorities.

Don't get me started!!! I have a brother and a sister who are like this, and then they complain to "mommy" who then proceeds to buy them, or take them, or give them whatever they want. I have 5 children, I don't complain, I plan, save and scrimp, and no one gives me anything. This makes me so angry sometimes I could just scream!!!!!!

I'd have to say 1/2 of your post is ME!! The last half isn't. Me and my husband would never let anyone take care of a bill for us!! We eat out alot because DH is a cop and is sleeping when I get home (he works midnights), I have to find food for myself which usually consits of microwaveable meals or fast food (that's the eating out part). Hence all the cable channels we have again because we hardly ever see each other and we need something to do. (Though we're tight on money because we're paying off our consolidation credit card which mostly consisted of a $8000 dental bill )
AND we go to Disney every year (even though we're in debt) because we never see each other and we love disney!! But we're not the kind of people that will only go somewhere if someone offers to pay

I'm a bit like that myself. I scrimp and save and pinch pennies until they cry for mercy, but on other things I splurge. It's just a matter of priorities.

I'd rather brown bag my lunch every day and buy a Disney ticket with the money I save. I'd rather drive my old car and pay for airfare for a wonderful family vacation. My daughter swears I spent her college fund at Disney World.

I guess we all just have to do what feels right for our own family.

They are also the same people who love the word "free" and will show up to take in their share of free even if it means driving half way across the state to get it. For example, they actually showed up at a free smoke detector give away ( for low income families ) just to get 2 more smoke detectors. They didn't need them, but they were free. That's where my blood starts to boil. I mean really, at what point is cheap too cheap?

YES I DO. This lady I know dh makes 60,000 more than we do and she cries poverty. I send my kids to private school and she wonders how we afford that and Disney. Well we do not have cabel and we do not eat out all the time and she shops like crazy and her dd 16 has major $ birthday party ( she invites me and my dd 14 to go but If I want to bring my other3 I will have to pay but her other friends kids do not have to and I really do not want to bring my other 3 in the first place!)
and she spends major $ on her dd for clothes . I have no idea where she gets her thinking.

She would go to the food pantry for diapers for her son and ask her church to help her out. then one day at womans meeting she asked everyone to pray because her husband would be bringing home only 1,000 for that week. something is not right with her????

Sometimes I think for many it's the "thrill of the hunt". I can get excited searching for a deal (not that excited ). I had to laugh at myself the other day....I had shopped at Save a lot then stopped at the mall for some expensive perfume . It's a matter of priorities..what's most important to the individual. We cut corners whenever we can but still manage to cruise and camp each year. And most importantly my children do not go without.

yes I totally understand. I have family members like this and sometimes they make me so mad I have to bite my tongue. They have no money but they eat out all the time, buy all kinds of things they don't need, have remodeled everyroom and their house. They brag about everything they have and how much it costs which makes it worse. Timeshares and new cars with every gizmo you can imagine. It was so bad at one point I would start to ask what new thing do they have now. Yet they continue to say we have no money we need to cut corners. Oh well enough venting but I totally know how it makes everyone feel. I almost start feeling like I don't measure up.
