Hi fellow disers !!!!!
A question for all you car renting pros ..... I have had a car rented from Thrifty for a couple months now, but I checked Alamo recently and found a better rate !! should I cancel Thrifty or keep it "just in case" ?? If I do keep both rentals, will I be charged for the one I don't use ?? Is this not "polite" to do ??? sorry for all the questions, but we haven't rented a car in years!!! :worried:

I think the polite thing to do is cancel the one you aren't going to use. There may be someone else having a hard time getting a rental reservation because of the supposed demand.

Yes they can charge for the one you don't cancel ahead of time.

I don't think that legally they can charge you for a reservation you don't keep UNLESS it says you may be charged somewhere in the fine print. Of course, what's legal and what they may try to do are two different things. Right now I have about 8 different ressies...everytime I see a good rate I grab it, but then I'll cancel all but the best. In fact, today is car rental he!! day, where I will check all rates, compare them, and then cancel a bunch o' ressies that I don't need.

Check the fine print because they can and do charge for reservations not cancelled within the time limits. They may not do it all the time but they are allowed if it is in the contract.

If you're not a member at the particular car rental agency where they have your credit card info on file, I don't see how they could possibly charge you. I've made reservations and no credit card was required and it wasn't done under a membership. I do cancel my old reservations when I book a new one because I generally am signed up in the membership program and they have my credit card number.

Just be careful making your cancellations. I did that - made one, made another when we decided to travel with another couple, then couldn't decide between a van or SUV so made another one. Decided to keep the SUV, called Budget to cancel the car and van and they cancelled ALL THREE! So, a week before I go I find out I don't have any vehicle and the rate is much higher to book. I spoke with customer service at Budget and they would NOT budge on the rate. In the mean time I became an AARP member (not as painful as it sounds) and found that through their discount with Avis I got an SUV for less then my original booking. Needless to say - Avis is now my choice.

I have an EA contract number via my company and a Hertz Gold. I have at times had both reservations under these contracts and I have not been charged. However, the conditions of your contract may vary. I would call the rental car company and ask?
"what happens if I don't show?"
Dollar could not charge me for example since they have no CC and don't ask for one when you make a reservation.
