Do you introduce yourself to your waiter/waitress?

So I just turned on the tv and the reality show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" is on. It was right in the middle of a scene where one of the sisters is sitting down at a restaurant with her boyfriend. I heard the waiter say his name or something and the boyfriend says "Hi I'm Scott, this is Kourtney." Then the waiter says "nice to meet you." Do people do this? It is proper manners to introduce yourself to your waiter? I've certainly never done that.

Uhhh, my answer would be no. I'm pretty sure my waiter doesn't care what my name is.

I can't imagine introducing myself to a server. Very odd. But then again taking it from the source, I guess not so odd. Talk about a bunch of people who managed to find fame and fortune through a good publicist.

He's never worked with the public (er except for the time in the Marines? That doesn't really count, though?) so he doesn't really get how annoying it is. I hate when people call me by my name. You don't know me, shush!

OMG I so agree with all of this! And DH calls strangers by their name too. Or at least he used to do this until I made him quit it. I get the heeby jeebies when someone I don't know calls me by my first name.

Umm, from a former server, I actually really appreciated when people called me by my name. It sure beats "Hey You!" "Miss" Maam" "Excuse Me" and any excessive waving of the arms. I've introduced myself and included my name for a reason.

I didn't mind when people introduced themselves. It was funny and I made sure to refer to them by name when giving them their food or asking if they needed refills.

I didn't mind when people introduced themselves. It was funny and I made sure to refer to them by name when giving them their food or asking if they needed refills.

I guess to each their own, but I've always hated it!

I hated it when I worked fast food, when I served tables and when I was a teller.

My friend does this and it embarrasses me beyond description.

The only time I address a server by name is if I need to get his/her attention as they are blowing past my table, and I never introduce myself.

I don't introduce myself. It has never occurred to me to do so. But if other people did, I would just think that they were really friendly.

Also, I never realized people had a problems with a stranger calling them by their first names AFTER they had introduced themselves to that person. Isn't that why the server tells you his/her name in the first place? Isn't that the point of name tags?
