When asked where you are from, do you live in a place where you must specify your city and state?

I saw a tv commercial where a guy says "I'm from Los Angeles, California".
Well no DUH! Los Angeles, California, really?

I think there are some places where just the name of the city will suffice--San Francisco, Detroit, and Philadelphia come to mind. I recently moved to Louisville and you'd be surprised how many people said "Kentucky?" Yeah...have you heard of it?

If you live in a place like Las Vegas, New Mexico, Portland, Oregon/Maine, or a city called Springfield,(Mass, Missouri, Illinois) it's understandable that you''d specify the state.

Must you specify your state when naming your home base?

I just say I live in Northern NJ near NYC. LOL. I am to tired to tell people the town cause I get *** looks sometimes.

It doesn't bother me at all. Because after all there is:

Louisville, KY
Louisville, CO
Louisville, MS
Louisville, OH
Louisville, AL
Louisville, GA
Louisville, IL
Louisville, KS
Lousiville, NE
Louisville, TN

Most of the time, I'll just say Baltimore, but every now and then, I'll say Baltimore, Maryland because I'm sure there are other Baltimores out there, though I personally don't know where they are. I know it seems safe to assume that if I say Baltimore, I mean the one in Maryland, but I just like to be safe sometimes :confused3

If I'm talking to people from out of state, I include it. Even though it's the capital, I don't know how recognizable it is to others. Geography has always been a strong point of mine, but I know it's a weakness with others.

Also Louisville, MD, Louisville, MO, Louisville, MT and Louisville, NY.

When I say Philadelphia then no I do not.

When someone asks where I grew up I say Allentown, Pa.

Sometimes I even sing the Billy Joel song, lol

This was my point about Las Vegas, New Mexico. One Las Vegas is pretty well known(the one in Nevada). If you live in Las Vegas, NEW MEXICO, that's when you mention it. When I moved to Louisville, I kinda thought when I mentioned it to people they wouldn't think "Oh, he's going to Mississippi"(although I'm sure it's lovely).:)

I just say D/FW. When most people think of the metroplex, they just think Dallas and have never even heard of Ft. Worth.

Even when I mention my state some people will still give me a confused look.:)

I dont have to specify my state, but I lie about the City I am from.

I live in a Downey Ca, but I just say Los Angeles... it makes things much easier.

DH (and his entire family) drives me crazy with this!! In DH's defense, he does a lot of work over the phone. It's perfectly fine to say city and state when dealing with someone from out of state, but if they're only 25 miles down the road, I'm pretty sure they've heard of us!

His parents do the same thing. We can go out to eat with them a few miles down the road and if the waitress happens to ask where we're from, they have to answer city and state!:confused3

Same here. I live in a suburb of Los Angeles so I just say L.A. if I'm talking to someone from out of town.

I just say Bawlmor HON and they know it's the Maryland one.

I usually will say "Fort Worth", then eye the person to see if they seem familiar with it, and then say "Texas" if they look confused. While I might use our nearby larger city as a reference point, I never never ever say "I'm from Dallas" :scared:.

I usually just say Pittsburgh. But sometimes when I am talking to someone on the phone - to place an order or something, I try to say Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I wonder about this too whenever I tell people that one DD lives in Richmond (VA) and one DD lives in Durham (NC). I sometime wonder if I should specify the states?

:rotfl:

I have to, because I think every state has a Salem. ;) I live in Salem, NH and work in Salem, MA, so I even have to specify which state when I'm at work and someone asks where I live. :)

I can say Tampa, without the state. :teeth: However, I really live 15 miles out of Tampa, but when I say my town, even many natives don't know the town! :lmao:
