Do you have thrift stores and yard sales?

In the US, our favorite shopping is at yard sales (where a person sets up tables in his garage or yard to sell unwanted items, usually cheap, typically on the weekend) or thrift stores (sponsored by charities or churches where people drop off unwanted items and the store sells them to raise money).

We also like to do this while on vacation, since you can get really neat stuff that's unique to the locale. Right now I'm wearing a t-shirt I got in Hawaii last year at a thrift store. It advertised a charity function and is very interesting. I think I gave a dollar for it.

We'll be visiting the UK in about a month. Will I find the same type of thing there? What do you call them, so I won't look foolish when I inquire?

Thanks,

Sheila

Here in the uk we have Charity shops, which as the name suggests are shops that sell old goods donated by people. The closest thing to yard sales we have are car boot sales. Hope this helps.

The best place to find out about car boot sales is local newspapers or ask people, they usually happen between may-october and start from about 7am and finish mid afternoon but it does depend where you go, they are usually on fields or car parks, depending if your lucky you should find some bargains.

We also have outlet shops just like you do where you can get some real bargains too, up here there are some at Hartlepool and Stockton on Tees (plus a few others) which are advertised on our tv channels from time to time:thumbsup2 Great if you can drive or catch a bus from where you are to get there.
