I'm just curious about how hard it is to find Porketta. I grew up eating Porketta in northern MN, but when I lived in TX and LA, nobody had even heard of it before. Now I've heard it's even hard to find in southern MN. Do you have it in your area?

(If not, you don't know what you're missing!!! :lovestruc )

I've never heard of either so I'm guessing no.

We have it several times per year. Usually, I make it in the crock pot so it is fork tender and can be easily shredded. I ordered a meat slicer that should arrive in March from JCPenneys. I told my DH that I wanted to be able to slice porketta thin after I've roasted it.

I like it when it's very dilly. The grocery store to which I usually go loads it with cracked pepper. I don't like that as much as the ones slathered with garlic and dill.

Hmm, now you've got me thinking....

I never heard of it. Is it an Amish thing?

Today I picked up what looked to me like pork loin with some sort of marinade or spices rubbed on it. It is called Porchetta. Would this be the same thing?

Is there some special way to cook it? I was just going to roast as usual, but would love to hear other suggestions.

Never heard of it. I'm in the San Francisco area.

OK, I had to google it. It looks like a boneless pork roast, with oregano and fennel. It sounds pretty yummy, and easy to make.

Roast it as usual or cook it in the crockpot so you can shred it. If you do, you'll have marvelous sandwiches.

I always thought it was an Italian thing.

Love the Porketta Sandwiches...we have them every year at the Italian Festival in July. The Festival chef's can never make enough. It is always the first food item to go. Terri

Wow, I just looked this up on Food Network and it sounds delicious. I thought it might be Amish because a few people from PA said they've heard of it but it's not something I've ever seen in NJ or NY.

I grew up eating it in northern Minnesota. I guess I hoped that nobody else was being subjected to it. :)

yes, I believe that is the same thing. cook as you would cook any other roast. I do 7 hours in a crockpot. SO yummy!!!

We just found a really great meat market near us. for the same price as the local grocery store, we can get meat that is 10x better - and Porketta is one of the things we found there. it is incredible how much better it tastes than what they sell at the grocery store!!! :worship:
