We have an inground and LOVE it. Could never go to above ground after this. Mom says she would get an inground installed again in a heartbeat. We had it put in about 12 years ago and still have the original vinyl liner.

Vinyl not Vinly...I shouldn't type fast:rolleyes:

We have an inground vinyl with a heater than we had installed 9 years ago. Just came in from it a short while ago and we love it. But, we may have to have the liner changed next season. We've had a diver come twice in the last year patch little holes.

Let's see - the kids are on about their 7th hour of swimming today. :)

I wouldn't do a vinyl liner again though. Ours is going to have to be replaced at the end of the summer. DH is wondering if it is possible to convert it to gunite.

We have an inground pebble tek (sp?) pool and we love it. We put it in when we were building our house (moved in 6 months ago). DD is a water rat and spends hours at a time in the pool, you just can't beat it out here in the desert!

My parents had the pool built before I was born. It's a lot of work to maintain, but it has several benefits. My mom would do it again for the grandkids, who can't stay out of it. We just bought a couple of blow-up toys yesterday for them to play with.

We have had three homes. Our first home, we got a pool company and had one built around 4 years after we moved in. Unfortunately, we did not do our homework well, and we got a company that was not reputable and the company took our money (and lots of other people, too) and skipped town leaving us a hole in the ground with exposed plumbing and rebar. We spent a long time filing with the registrar of contractors to get our money back and find another company to finish the pool around 1 year process. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!

Our second home, we purchased a home with an existing pool. The pool was built in the late 70's and we had to re-do the kool deck because of the cracking. It also had the 70's colors for the tile and I hated it, but we never were able to redo the inside of the pool. It was a diving pool and the kids loved diving in the pool off the diving board.

Our third home, we had built and used the pool company that had a contract with the builder to build us our pool while the home was being built. This time, we did our homework and this company was a reputable company! The only regret with this pool was I wish we got it Pebble Tec rather than just plaster and I wish we had elevated the spa around a foot higher than the pool with the spa flowing into the pool.

Our next home, we will have the perfect pool!

We live in a condo complex and we have a pool. It's wonderful on a nice summer day.

If you should put one in your house, please install a very good fence around the pool (not the yard). There have been a least 2-3 children drown in our are in swimming pools.

We have one and love it. Ours was built in the early 80's and is still going strong. We replaced the pump and filter last year and next summer we'll need to replace the liner. We moved into the house 7 years ago and I believe the liner was a couple of years old then. I am assuming they last about 10 years and it will be around $2500 to replace. The pump and filter were originals so they lasted around 20 years.

Of course my pool boy (DH) does all of the work so the kids and I get to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

They are a lot of fun, they are an expense though. After the intitial installation and enjoying it for years you will have to update. After our 15th season we got a new liner, pump, filter, auto chloronator, heater and had all the electrical rewired and added new landscaping. An electric Vacuum is a must otherwise you'll spend a lot of time vacuuming by hand. We got a Polaris 360 which runs when the pump is running. It cleans the pool spotless!
I would also spend a little more on Energy Star whenever it's available...for the heater especially. It saves a lot in the long run.
If we had to do it again we would. We've shared a lot of laughs in that pool!

This is our third summer. We had it installed and would definitely do it again. In-ground with vinyl liner. No trouble at all with the pool at all.

The kids love it as do we.

We sprang for a heater. At this latitude, the heater really extends the pool season!

We got a Kreepy Kraul cleaner which works very well and saves having to vacuum by hand.

We consider it to be the best money we've spent!

Here's our pool!

When we hit the lottery! :p

When I bought a holiday home in Florida I had a pool built with it. It was certainly very popular when on vacation, but when I move full time to Fl I will most likely buy on a development that has a community pool and use that. A number of reasons but in no particular order

1) a private pool is pretty expensive to run

2) As Kimberle alludes to there are safety issues with a private pool. There are temptations for kids to go swim alone, granted that's also the case with a community pool, but when it's so close the temptation is greater and if your family isn't out at your own pool there is no chance there will be other families/people to help the child if they get into trouble. You need to make sure you have pool alarms or alarms on the doors leading to the pool ( and that they work) and or a fence around it that the kids can't get past.

3) Using a community pool means the kids get the chance to make friends and or play with other kids on the community. It helps them makes friends and also means they are less likely to require entertainment from their parents all the time.

4) Community pools are usually a lot bigger than a private one and will give a better chance to do laps or to train a child how to swim properly.

We installed a Viking Fiberglass inground pool this past winter. Have a heat pump, so started swimming in March.

We are loving it. It's great to swim on your own terms, whenever you want. If we used a community pool, it would be with everyone else, and their stated hours.

We end up usually swimming in the late afternoon/early evening, sometimes late at night ;)

The only issue with our pool is our neighbor children (kids who, due to visitation, shared custody) - we never saw them until we put the pool in. Now we have to run them off!

I'm in the minority who had a house built and HAD to have a pool so we had it built with the house. That was 11 years ago, and we recently moved-#1 criteria when we looked? NO POOL! It's so costly(buying all the chemicals) and time-consuming(or costly again) to keep it clean (even though we have a cleaning system, we still have to vacuum it, brush off algae, etc.,etc. or pay someone else to do it). So although we might consider an area with a community pool, since we live in such a hot climate, never again will we have the bother of owning one.

Had our pool (inground gunite) installed the year after we built our house. It is so important to shop around and go with a company that has been around for a long time. We would do it again in a second. It is expensive, but our kids like to stay here and play in our pool. It is good exercise and I love the idea of the kids coming to our house to play rather than running all around town!

It came with the house, custom made about 30 years old, concrete, never had a problem (knock, knock on wood). Love it, kids are in it constantly.
