I was just thinking of one Thanksgiving dinner when I was younger. My mother worked that day (nurse) and probably got home around 3:30 or 4:00 then proceeded to put out a big dinner. I realize now how stressed and tired she must have been. We were all looking forward to her pumpkin pie, after one bite we realized there was no sugar in the pie. Thankfully, no one said a word, we knew not to say anything. We laugh now, but it wasn't funny then!

I loved Thanksgiving with my parents and my sisters. Then eventually the husbands joined. But I had a bittersweet Thanksgiving the year my husband died. Thanksgiving was less than a week after he was buried. And it was very strange to me to be spending it at my girlfriend's house (thank goodness for her!) with my mom and her parents. Very bittersweet, but I think one of the most memorable.

We spent the week at the Carribean Beach resort. We saw a Space Shuttle Launch.
I had Lasagna (my Favorite) on thanksgiving.
Teh funniest thing was seeing christmas lights and wreaths on the Palm trees. :wave2:

My mothers sisters family came to our house every year for Thanksgiving for as long as I could remember. My mother always did the cooking. Well one year my mothers BIL came into some money so he decided he was going to do the turkey and get a cooked one all ready for us...a really nice idea. Well this was 1989 and for those in this area you probably remember the snow storm we had that day. The relatives lived about 1 hour away normally and with the storm, they decided it was best not to make the trek up here. So here we sat in a snow storm with potatoes, corn, etc... but no turkey on Thanksgiving. ;)

I have a couple of redneck type of National Lampoon's type Thanksgiving dinners, but my stories would just be long posts.;)

I grew up with a big family so there were lots of funny stories.

My most memorable Thanksgiving was when I was in germany. I fixed the whole deal for my landlords. They didn't speak english and I didn't speak german, but they loved it and tried to ask a ton of questions. Thankfully their daughter was there and she spoke a little english. lol

One year after we had moved from NY to Texas we tried to make the best of it being so homesick for our families. We invited an older couple who also moved down with us. They missed their families terribly also but enjoyed our 3 ds. We also invited a couple from a foreign country. We tried to explain the traditions of thanksgiving to them but I think it got lost in the language barrier. Also it was the 1st turkey I cooked and guess what. When DH jammed the knife into the bird that was nicely on the platter I might add, a big flow of red came out, Thats right, I had cooked the giblets inside. The older lady couldnt stop laughing and it cheered her up and made her day. The foreign couple still didnt get what we were all laughing about.

Last year our guinea pig died on thanksgiving day. Our dss were so sad, saying this is our worst thanksgiving ever, (grandpa had just died that year too). My ds was telling me to hurry up because the ground was cold and he wanted to dig a hole fast. We had plans to attend a local church service and apologized for being late and told them we had to have an impromptu pet funeral. That was a thanksgiving to remember for all the wrong reasons.

do exploding turkeys count? I heard it secondhand but a deep fried turkey blew up in a garage

My sister did the same thing once with pecan pie. It is one of my favorites. Brought my slice home, sat down for a late snack and UGH. No sugar in it. Pretty nasty tasting.

My favorite story was a bout 6 years ago...my aunt showed up with a "guest" who turned out to be a british exchange student! She had brought him because he wouldn't be "home" for thanksgiving and we had to explain to her that they don't celebrate thanksgiving in England! He later pulled my grandmother aside and thanked her for the fun, and told her that he didnt have the heart to tell my aunt about it!! I love it!

Our first Thanksgiving away from our family, we decided to go out to dinner. Our kids were 3 and 4 at the time. The only restaurant open was the Golden Corral (think a lower class Ponderosa). We were the ONLY people in the whole place. The waitresses kept doting on the kids, but it just wasn't Thanksgiving. It was kind of like the Christmas dinner in Santa Clause when Tim Allen takes his son to Denny's. I was SOOOO homesick!

We had a party at our house that Saturday for all the people who had moved from Indianapolis out to Southern Maryland with our base closing. About 50 people showed up, and it kind of made up for the Golden Corral fiasco!

Since then, we've found a really nice B&B that we have Thanksgiving at.
