Do you have a digital photo frame???

I was going to get one for my Ma-in-Law BUT decided the technology would faze her :faint: so I got this instead: Magic Frame 40 photo holder...

You can choose from up to 40 stored frames in one easy operation. To load a new photo, simply pull out the side tray and push back in repeatedly until the desired photo is shuffled to the top and displayed in the window. Cost about £13 plus cost of the photos which I printed myself...

I got my mum a Sony one a couple of years ago. She absolutely loves it, probably one of the most used presents I have bought her.

I got one for my birthday, it was about £35 in Argos. I sent it back after a week, the pictures all glowed so brightly it hurt to look, they were all bright red/orange hued (we all looked like we'd spent about a year in a sunbed) and it gave me a headache after 5 minutes.

FIL wants to buy one for MIL this xmas but that experience has really put me off them.

I have 2 and have had no problems with them at all. There are Phillips ones both with a resolution of 800 by 400. The resolution means that you get a sharper picture and is often the difference between cheaper frames and more expensive ones. The Phillips ones regularly win the best in class in tests in Stuff and Gadget Show. The current Phillips one is only 400 by 280 or something like that. I bought that for my Dad and I could tell it wasn't as sharp a picture but he loved it. It also went straight into slideshow mode which made it easy for him to use.

They both do transitions (effects between picture changing) and take all the well known memory cards plus have on board memory. I usually use my old compact cards in them as well as my current sd ones and with my computer having a card reader it is easy to swap photos.

I also bought a cheap fridge magnet frame from Amazon which again is easy to use. Its picture resolution is low but because it is only a 2 inch screen it is not as obvious.

Another thing to watch out for is does the picture frame automatically fit the picture to the frame, some require adjusting on the the computer first or some end up stretching the photo (similar effect as stretching a non widescreen picture to widescreen).

I personally love them as I enjoy seeing the photos I have taken and the digital frames allow you to view a wider selection than just the one in a standard photo frame.

The best thing to do is read comments on the Amazon site and see what actual users say.

I got one in July and never switch it on anymore.

Thanks for this very helpful info!

I am going to get the 800 x 400 resolution but I am having trouble finding one in either a Brown or Oak frame - I wanted to get it to match in with my lounge decor....but may just end up getting a silver one if I can't it.

i have decided to get one for my parents are they really user friendly ..?
as we gave them a digital tv box and they are moaning they cant get it to work properly even though its a very simple one to use

I have always found the Phillips frames very user friendly. However, I am into technology and don't have problems with them.

My Dad does have a computer but does have to be shown how to do things. I am proud of him that he has learnt a lot and does take on technology which he does struggle with sometimes.

The Phillips 7 inch one just went straight into slideshow mode when I switched it on for him. I had already filled a card up with family photos off my own computer. They both enjoyed seeing photos of the family. He also liked the fact that he could just insert his own memory card from his camera straight into it.

However, that is as far as it goes. I don't think he has looked at the settings or anything. I keep meaning to say I will have a look at the manual just to check everything is set at optimum settings. He hasn´ t put photos on to the memory card via the computer yet but I will walk him through that when he wants to do that.

So it depends on how computer literate your parents are if they want to use older photos on their card. If they would just use the frame for current photos on their card it is very simple to use as you just insert the card and the frame just starts displaying them.
