I clean the house from top to bottom on Saturdays during the winter. Come summer time I clean upstairs on Wednesday night and downstairs on Thursday night...that way it doesn't cut into beach time
Sweep daily. Beds made daily. Laundry done when needed. Dishes/pots&pans are done directly after the meal -- if I don't they stay forever and are twice as hard to clean with the gunk stuck on. Anything used during the course of a day (art supplies, toys, etc.) gets cleaned up and put back at the end of the activity.
I have big things I do on a schedule though. Things like cleaning windows, washing walls and curtains, moving appliances and furniture for cleaning behind, shampooing rugs, that type of stuff.
One thing I find is I get distracted during cleaning. I used to find something that didn't belong somewhere and would leave the half cleaned room to put it in it's place and, by the end of the morning, I'd have a dozen half-cleaned areas and nothing done. At which point I'd throw up my hands and leave it the way it was
Now I keep all my cleaning supplies in a carrier so I don't forget anything (and go wandering) and I begin cleaning with an empty laundry basket. Anything that doesn't belong in that area gets tossed into the basket and, eventually, gets returned to it's rightful home because I'll be passing throw during cleaning. It's really made a HUGE difference. I actually clean the entire house now
