I was just reading another thread about living in the South and it made me remember visiting my BIL and SIL in Virginia. I was flabbergasted that they didn't have basements down there. I live in NY and MOST of the houses here have basements. (I get amused easily, can't you tell?) It's just funny how things are so different in different parts of the country.

I have a finished basement and am actually in it right now because that is where my computer is.

So do you have a basement?

Yep, most of hte homes in this area have them. Only a few near the river where a flood is more likely don't have them. I had to have one since most homes don't have good storage around here otherwise.

Yes - but I also live in New York - LOL.. However, my DD & her DH live about 25 miles from here and the entire neighborhood that they live in is "basementless"..

No basement here. If there was it would be flooded as the water table is too high.

Yes, I am in the basement right now. It is totally finished, drywalled carpeted and my computer is down here. So I pretty much live in the basement.

Yep, in MN, very odd not to have a basement unless yo uare near a river or lake.

herc.

Yup, everyone in VT has a basement I think!

Ours is 1/2 finished.... it's split 1/2 the length of the house...the finished half houses our weight room, and family room, with the bar and large indoor kids toys. I also have an office downstairs that is partitioned off the rest of the finished part, with it's own lights/door etc..

The other half houses the woodstove, furnace, oil tank, h20 heater, washer, dryer, and storage.

Even the unfinished half is more finished than some others...it's a poured foundation so the floors and walls are smooth, not brick or stone.

Couldn't imagine not having 1/2 finished....especially in a 3 bedroom ranch with not much space on the living floor!

My sister in Northern Virginia has a finished basement. But in the area of Virginia I'm at, I'm told we're at sea level...made sense to me the second someone said that. No basements where I am, but plenty of gorgeous ocean and bay!

You mean Dungeon? I live in a 200 year old victorian and I will tell you, it is a dungeon!!

I was told by someone that they don't have basements in the South because of hurricane flooding (which could be partly true) but I never thought about being at sea level!!!! That makes so much sense!!! Thanks.

DUH!!!! (said to myself) Sometimes I think I just don't think!!! :jester:

I'm another New Yorker with a basement. It isn't finished, the same size as the upstairs and that is where my washer/dryer are and all my bins of stuff! In about a month we are going to finish it to make a playroom and office. We are also bringing the washer/dryer up to the main floor. I hate lugging all the clothes down to the basement!!LOL As for the rest of the area, it is rare to not have a basement.

We have a ranch with a full walk-out basement. Of course, most of the basement is unfinished, but DW Lauri does have plenty of ideas to redo the basement.

This reminds me of when I first moved to Richmond. Not long after, a friend came to visit with her fiance', who was originally from Richmond. She was from New Orleans and the concept of a basement was completely foreign to her. She was in awe and disbelief when she went to the home of one of the fiance's friends and went into the basement.

See, so it's not just me that thinks about basements, huh???;)

Yes, I have a basement with a 2-car garage. Walls are poured and it runs the length of the house.

Most homes in AL have basements... most with a 2-car garage.

Sure wish I did - even if it was unfinished - I need storage space!
We looked at a few houses here (Arizona) that have them - but there are none that I know of in our neighborhood. We're on the side of a Mtn. well, as much of a Mtn. as you get here. The ground is so hard and rocky (boulders really) it would cost a fortune to dig!

No, but I pretty much back to the Great Dismal Swamp, and only have to dig 4 feet or so to get my hands wet.....so it's impossible :)

We had one in Northern Virginia.... it was a walk-out....not visible in the front, but full sliding glass doors and window on the back....lots of hills in that area, so that's the usual.
