Do You Get Sad When You Put Christmas Decorations Away?

I'm usually eager to get the decorations up but the longer they're up, the more the house starts to feel cluttered, and the more I start to itch. Usually they start coming down shortly after New Year's. This Saturday we're having a party so I've left them up. They'll start coming down on Sunday.

Yes, I get really sad and depressed in January. We try to head it on face first and plan for things to make it better.

I like my tree down by Jan 1st and the rest down the first weekend after Christmas. I think it stems from when I worked full time - if I didn't get it all down by then, it would be weeks before I could get it done.

Plus we have to move furniture around and put some in another room making that room unusable in order to have a spot for our tree. Drives me crazy and I'm glad when the tree is down so I can get the house back in order again.

This year I wanted to put up my fun 4 ft. red tree since it could fit in the front window without moving furniture but everyone veto'd me and said they would help decorate the big one. Never happened - I did it all myself. Sigh.

Not really sad, but more contemplative. Taking down our Christmas decorations is more bittersweet for me than sad, I guess... realizing another year is over & that our 3 children are another year older, thinking about how many Christmases DH & I have had together, how the years change us, where we are now & wondering where we'll be next Christmas...


We "undecorate" anywhere from New Year's Day to the 12th Day of Christmas (1/6). Like another PP mentioned, by 1/2, the décor starts to look cluttery & sad to me - like it's "taunting" & reminding me "Christmas is over! It's a new year!". This year, due to some other things, we started taking everything down on 1/6 & finished yesterday.

I just have a few wintery decorations out now - snowmen & snowflakes.

I hear ya. I feel the same way. DS hits the 1/2 mark in age every December. So we will have an official teenager in the house come June - YIKES!

In the past, I've gotten all the decorations down in one to two days and put away. This year, it's taken me practically all week. I finally got everything back over and into my mom's attic yesterday and got our living room back together. And like you, there are certain items that I will leave up b/c they double as winter décor.

In process of doing this week ~ I have a lot of decorations and feel the house always looks mighty gloomy when they are all taken down . Especially the tree, love the ornaments we've collected over 50 years and how peaceful the lights look at night reflecting in our sun room windows. I bought my dear Mom a small artificial c'mas tree last year when she was in Hospice care. Sadly this was our 1st c'mas without her, so decorated it in breast cancer ornaments and may leave it up awhile longer as somehow it makes me feel close to her.

As much as I love putting the tree and decorations up I love taking them all down. 3 or 4 weeks is enough for me, and the light airy feel the house has afterwards is great. Of course I don't live in a place with a real winter, so that might be part of it. This year we had houseguests for 9 days over Christmas so when they were gone I wanted Christmas to go with them lol!

I don't like it either. So what I do now is I put the Valentine's decor up right away. It's not the same but at least it's something festive and there is nothing wrong with celebrating love!

As much as I love the Christmas decorations, something happens after New Years and I can't wait to put them away. I think maybe it's because I don't get a lot of time off at Christmas or New Years so I need things to get back to normal as soon as possible.

Plus I can't wait to put hearts all over the house and then shamrocks.

Nope...don't like it. I haven't taken anything down yet, as my dd requested they stay up until we bring her back to school (which is tomorrow ). I'll start taking stuff down during the week a little at a time after work and will probably be done by Saturday. Some years I leave the lighted garland on the mantle until the end of winter. It's made of greening, pinecones, apples, berries etc and looks very wintery, not just Christmasy.

Actually for me, when Christmas is over I want everything down immediately. Lol I love putting Christmas decorations and the tree up on Black Friday or that weekend--and we enjoy it everyday leading up to Christmas, but once the holiday is over, I'm done with it. Now I count down for Easter and all that the spring brings: flowers, better weather, pastel colors, etc.

Nope, I love getting everything put away! It's fun to get it all out and set up, but after a few weeks, it gets to be too much stuff. I like to put it all away and enjoy the cleared out space and the new year. It always feels lighter than before once the decorations are down.

It is driving me a little crazy though because I packed it up last weekend and the totes are still sitting around. I need DH to help me get them to the garage & up into the attic. Tomorrow is the day!

Although we turned everything off on the 7th, we just got it all down and packed away today. Nope - not sad at all! Maybe try buying yourself a nice, bright bunch of flowers for a little pick-me-up.
